Tropical Storm Chantal remains a threat to Florida but forecasters can't predict with certainty where the storm will go as it moves north out of the Caribbean Sea Wednesday.
Facts
LATEST ON T.S. CHANTAL
Tropical Storm Chantal remained just below hurricane strength Tuesday evening with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
The National Hurricane Center's 5 p.m. update predicted the storm would be near hurricane strength before passing over Haiti and the Dominican Republican Wednesday. A hurricane watch remained in place for the Dominican Republic.
Sustained winds must reach 74 mph to classify a storm as a Category 1 hurricane.
Chantal is heading northwest at 26 mph. The storm is expected to approach Florida over the weekend.
On Tuesday evening, the National Hurricane Center expected the storm moving parallel to Florida along the east coast.
Computer models indicate the system could turn west toward Florida or another southeastern state over the weekend or early next week, but National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said it is too early to predict the storm's path that far out.
Most of Florida including Sarasota and Manatee counties is in the Hurricane Center's cone of uncertainty, reflecting the widely diverging paths Chantal could take, for Saturday and Sunday.
"It's a good idea to just be paying attention to it over the next couple days," Feltgen said.

(14,337 posts)At least on the Gulf Coast. The lake by my house it up almost 6 feet and to the point of overflowing. Since everything is very saturated already, a lot of rain from just a TS would not be good.

(620 posts)portion if it remains a TS, or eye if it strengthens) does make landfall along the coast, it will not do so until it passes the Carolinas

(10,340 posts)My guess is that it will get up to Category 1 or 2 strength. The waters are pretty warm, plenty of fuel for the storm to draw from. We've gotten pretty good at predicting storm tracks, but not so good at predicting strength.

(620 posts)the worry level escalated much too quickly for this rainstorm.
See post 5. Was not worried even then. Did not think it would turn into anything bothersome.

(12,047 posts)might not even make it to N. FL now - not that we need rain - the swamps is full
An Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft criss-crossing Tropical Storm Chantal this morning was barely able to find a closed circulation, and measured top winds of 45 mph at 10:10 am EDT in a region of heavy thunderstorms just south of the Central Dominican Republic coast. High wind shear of 20 - 30 knots, combined with dry air and the storm's exceptionally fast forward movement of 25 - 30 mph have seriously weakened Chantal, even before it has encountered the high mountains of Hispaniola and Cuba

Not every tropical system that appears on the map is worth pulling hair out is despair of potential disaster. This is one of those.
