Gogebic's armed guards come from company that features military-style training, impressive firepower

News of hired guns patrolling the Penokee Valley at the behest of mining company Gogebic Taconite has certainly gone viral in Wisconsin, and it’s beginning to leak into the national blogosphere as well.

John Marshall, editor of Talking Points Memo, a national liberal blog, did a follow up piece on the news that anti-mine activists broke over the weekend. Marshall discovered a number of interesting tidbits online about the Arizona-based firm providing the guards, Bulletproof Securities, which eluded local media (including yours truly).

For instance, company president Tom Parrella, who thus far has not responded to inquiries from Wisconsin media, has proudly given Arizona media a look at the ins and outs of his organization, from its extraordinary firepower (armored vehicles, mounted machine guns) to its military-style training.

In 2007, for instance, he told a local paper that his clients were largely celebrities and other wealthy individuals, including women going through nasty divorces who wanted to avoid unwanted attention:

Mining company might restrict public access

While progressives respond with outrage to photos of armed guards patrolling a proposed iron mining site in northern Wisconsin, the mining company that hired the guards suggests it may move to prevent protesters from coming on to the land at all, as they are currently allowed.

Bob Seitz, director of external relations for Gogebic Taconite, the Florida-based mining company that is seeking approval for an iron mine near Hurley, says the company is considering removing the land it plans to develop from the Wisconsin Managed Forest program, which offers tax incentives to property owners who open their land to public access.

To withdrawal from the program, says Seitz, the company would have to apply at the end of this year and would be able to begin restricting public access in January of next year.

"It would be an option for us in December," he says.

Freedom of Speech to state that their rights are being violated by corporations, will be tortured into compliance by the corporation. When you work for a private corporation you lose most of your rights until you "clock out" at the end of the day. If you are salaried you basically are on the clock at all times. So speech you may use that would be against corporate policy would be verboten. And things are getting to the point you cannot hide you opinion. Particularly on the internet, phone or email. The Argus drone can photograph everyone's moves at all times domestically and in the future around the globe. http://www.slate.com/blogs/future_tense/2013/02/06/argus_is_could_the_pentagon_s_1_8_gigapixel_drone_camera_be_used_for_domestic.html The Pentagon has it now but private corporations will have this just as they have all other things the military initially had.

We may as well get use to it. The next generation is already being conditioned to accept things our own concepts of freedom and human rights would have thought were despicable in the past. When I bring this up to anyone in their 20's the main theme I hear is, "This is 2013."
