"According to the federal documents the incident happened in January of 2012. The 14 year old special needs student was suspended for the day for acting out in class. The suit alleges that when her mother arrived at the school to pick the teen up, the girl was gone.
According to records the student didn't have permission to leave the school with anyone other than her parents and had to be signed out to leave by her parents.
Unable to locate their child the parents did contact GRPD to inform them she was missing and that she had special needs, bipolar, emotionally and educationally impaired.
The court documents say the girl was walking alone in the neighborhood when she was approached by a man who told her she should come to his house to warm up. He gave her a beer then raped her."

(951 posts)I had the same situation with the police. Assholes like that just reinforce the damage and mistrust of an already horrific experience. I had hoped there had been progress in 20+ years. My heart goes out to that girl.

(26,602 posts)If there's any truth at all to the statement that the police department took the kidnapping-rape-imprisonment less seriously because of the victim's characteristics or 'good witness' potential, then they need to receive some very severe corrective measures. Even if the girl did leave the school without permission, 'run-away' is a minute part of the issue - and the school needs to answer as to how it happened, and what they've done to ensure it doesn't happen again...

(2,670 posts)I'd like to know as well how the school can just lose a student. Speaking from experience when I was suspended a few times I wasn't allowed to leave the office until my parents came. Furthermore being bipolar something like this can set of a bipolar episode. When having one the person doesn't think clearly at all so the police can't treat her the same they would a normal teenager.Adding the rape on top of that even after the 4 months in the hospital its possible she won't ever fully recover. There needs to be pressure on the cops to find the assholes responsible for this before they rape more.

(22,336 posts)or at least almost legal.
The police don't even bother to investigate? So that means it was legal I guess? If someone had robbed me but the police thought I'd be a bad witness, does that mean they wouldn't investigate the robbery?
And this isn't the only rape case like this. How many rape kits were found in Detroit that no one ever did anything with? And then there's rape in prison and rape in the military that are treated as pretty legal.

(2,670 posts)yeah it definitley comes off as legal. I mean if you ignore everything else look at how many rape jokes are made when someone gets sent to prison. That shows the acceptance of rape in our culture
