http://www.newsday.com/long-island/public-to-discuss-proposed-gas-transfer-station-1.5649376Supporters and critics will face off Tuesday in the first public hearing over a controversial plan to build a natural gas transfer station 19 miles south of Jones Beach.
Under the "Port Ambrose" project, Liberty Natural Gas would build a $300 million system consisting of two buoys, two pipelines and a 22-mile main. This main would link up to an existing natural gas pipeline system that serves Long Island and New York City.
~snip~
But opponents worry about gas explosions and tanker accidents, saying it's about 30 miles east of New Jersey and too close to busy New York Harbor.
It'll also be inside the area where the New York Power Authority wants to build a wind farm. "We believe this to be the preferred use for the site," the agency said.

This strikes me a a hugely bad idea. Anyone in NY or NJ should start annoying their State reps, since both legislatures have to give it a green light.

That's where I was born. West Islip, NY, right on the Great South Bay near Fire Island. Please leave the beautiful beach alone.

They started talking about this gas thing years ago

I don't think so, really. There will be ships hooked up to them sometimes, of course, but it's not really huge.
In the meantime, whenever gas-fired furnaces run in the winter, they'll be using that gas. We haven't replaced all of the natural gas facilities with some other energy source, and furnaces are going to continue to need natural gas. Power plants, too.
I'd be more concerned about the remaining coal-burning power plants, frankly.
