White House: Egypt aid cutoff not in US interest

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says cutting off aid immediately to Egypt wouldn't be in the best interests of the United States.

White House press secretary Jay Carney says the U.S. is still reviewing whether the Egyptian military's ouster of President Mohammed Morsi should be labeled a coup d'etat. Under U.S. law, that would force the U.S. to stop sending aid to Egypt.

Carney says the issue is complex and difficult. He says the U.S. is reviewing its obligations under the law and will consult with Congress. He says the decision about what to call Morsi's ouster will be in line with U.S. policy objectives. He says the U.S. isn't supporting any side in the conflict but wants a democratic process.

Reminds me of enhanced interrogation being used to redefine of torture. Looks like they are now seeking to redefine
coup d'etat.

The issue is only complex if you're a cretin.

With the situation in Egypt as fluid as it is and the only entity capable of holding it together is the Army we would be fools to cut off our military aid to them. As good as handing the country over to Islamist extremists.

Stupid is as stupid.......

Having decided to completely ignore US law on the subject I'm wonder which other laws are open to misinterpretation dependent on what the weather is like.

Egypt is an important ally in the region and I don't think they want to cut off aid. I also think Israel is working behind the scenes the make sure US aid to Egypt is not cut.

But to me this is an obvious coup. But then again, when Mubarak was overthrown, that seemed very coup-like...but aid continued to flow.

Unless we invoke the national security exception. In other words, coups are bad, except the ones we like.
