Anti-'Obamacare' commercial to start running in Ohio this week

July 08, 2013 at 8:30 AM

WASHINGTON -- Within months, Ohioans will start seeing the rates, costs and/or benefits of the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. But Americans for Prosperity is not waiting.

The group, funded by the billionaire conservative Koch Brothers, disdains many things about President Barack Obama's White House, and Obamacare tops the list this week. The message in an ad that will run on broadcast and cable TV in Ohio and Virginia starting Tuesday: You should be scared.

“The American people have serious questions and concerns about the negative impact of Obamacare,”AFP president Tim Phillips said in a news release. “They are waking up to higher premiums and fewer choices, but are being told by the White House and outside groups that everything is just fine. We feel it is important to provide education on the true consequences of government intrusion into the private healthcare decisions of families, and provide a counter to disinformation that’s out there.”

The ad features a young mother named Julie, who says her son got medical care that "meant the world to me" when he started having seizures two years ago. "Now," she says, "I'm paying more attention."

They don't even say what we're supposed to be scared of. For me, it looks as if I will pay a slightly higher premium than I am paying now for my individual plan (assuming I continue to make the same salary) Well, at least based on the "silver plans" I've seen. Those plans tend to have better coverage than I get now though. Also, the ACA gives piece of mind that if I was to come onto hard times, I will not be S.O.L, or that I won't get screwed over because the insurance company decides something is a pre-existing condition. I'd rather pay a little bit more so that I don't have to worry about what might happen in the future.

Also, there are plenty of people out there who are not offered insurance by their employment, but don't make enough to afford $100-200(or more if it's the entire family) for individual health insurance. They go without at this current time. At least they will finally be able to get health insurance that costs them an amount relative to their income, but it will be insurance that isn't completely useless like many of the cheap insurance plans out there now.

So, I'd really like to see them explain which part of that we're supposed to be scared of.
