Fred Hayes was watching planes land at San Francisco airport and filmed the Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash landing.

(68,644 posts)Wind shear? I don't know what phenomenon may have dropped that heavy 777 like that with just 200 yards to touchdown but it wouldn't be a power drop, IMHO.
Interesting, too, to see with certainty that it flipped and recovered.
Descriptions have been conflicting as to this aspect and as to when the fire began.

(115,835 posts)While the specific cause isn't established yet, what is obvious is that the airplane came in too low and slow and clipped the tail on the firewall when it belatedly tried to go around. There was no windshear or power loss.

(68,644 posts)It's a hit or miss, less margin of error. The rip rap border between tarmac and sea water is too unforgiving.
You're right in the sense that tens of thousands of landings have not ended this way.
I'm right in suggesting that another 250 yards on approach could have saved two lives in this case.

(115,835 posts)And normal landing distance from the actual runway end should be about 1,000 feet; nobody should ever even come close to the seawall. If they had extended the runway another 250 feet they still could have landed short.

(68,644 posts)And this was a good day, imagine a bad day.
I fly SMF by choice, with OAK and SJC as backups, and MRY when it works.
Not that they have better approaches, it has more to do with parking and security times.
If I had my way I'd be flying MKK, HNL, OGG, NAN, CHC, and like that!

(115,835 posts)Pilots working for major airlines should be able to handle airports much worse than this one.

(3,891 posts)Too low on approach, and it looked like he stalled.

(3,891 posts)They waited too long, the plane was no longer flying, it was falling. Looked lucky to keep from dumping it into San Fran Bay.
Stick Shaker is a mechanical alarm to let the pilot know the plan is on the edge of a stall. A stall is when air no longer is flowing across the wings, but around them, and lift is no longer being maintained due to slow speed.

It would be great if we lived in a perfect world where things like this never happen.

(31,464 posts)Husband (with camera) sounds genuinely upset. However, wife almost sounds excited. "And you're filming it!" she repeats a few times. Sounds like she more concerned with how much they'll make off selling the video.
