For me personally, the very idea of secrecy in government is anathema to the idea of democracy.

It's rather like religion. It requires a leap of faith.

(15,139 posts)clearance confided that the information he was privy too (which he did not divulge) was classified only because the US was engaged in unlawful, unconstitutional activities. This kind of shit has been going on for a very long time. Today the job classification "cyber warrior" - code for professional snoop - is huge in the defense industry. The police state has long been a reality. Now it's just more brazen and pervasive.
