Looking Back At 40 Years Of 'Our Bodies, Ourselves'
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/04/our-bodies-ourselves-2011_n_982586.html
We didnt even know we were starting anything, said Doress-Worters, one of the original co-authors of Our Bodies, Ourselves. The Boston Womens Health Collective -- the group of women behind the book -- was born out of a workshop held at Emmanuel College in 1969 called Women In Control of Our Bodies.
"I was really excited by the conversation, Doress-Worters said. A lot of it came down to [the fact that] not only did we not have answers -- we didnt know the questions to ask. From these informal discussions, a collective vision was born.
Putting together the first edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves also had a profound effect on the personal development of Doress-Worters and Joan Ditzion, a clinical social worker and founding co-author of "Our Bodies, Ourselves." [OBOS] just opened up doors for me, Ditzion said. We didnt have our own notion of what female sexuality was [before].
After the surprising success of the New England Free Press edition -- the publishers had initially been skeptical that anyone would pay 75 cents for a book on women's health -- the authors began getting offers from commercial publishers. In 1973, Simon & Schuster published the first commercial edition of Our Bodies, Ourselves. The rest is history.
It's Time, It's past Time!

Couldn't believe those ridiculous quotes. Do these people live in 2013?
I don't know what year they live in...let alone which galaxy they reside in.
They are not from this world that is for sure!

(794 posts)I read it in the mid eighties and it woke me up to the disparities and scioeconomic unfairness presented by our system toward women.
I found the warmth of the way each subject is presented to be distinctly humanizing. The fact that so many misogynistic assumptions are explored and uncovered in such a frank way is very enpowering. As a man, my ability to understand the challenges faced by women is restricted by the fact that I am a man, but reading this book with an open mind helps to inspire a further interest in the writings and philosophy of feminism. If you are ignorant of the way the famale reproductive system works, this book will answer questions you didnt even know you had.
All husbands and fathers should see this as required reading.
