least promising and pledging to institute major reforms in the NSA/Surveillance state practices?

It won't make a bit of difference by then. This whole issue is just a passing fad that will be long forgotten by 2016

Even if the issue is raised - Most Democrats will support or not care where their candidate stands on this particular issue

Popular outcry from many liberal and progressive activists will make it necessary for any potential nominee to commit themselves to major reforms in the NSA/Surveillance state practices.

(10,611 posts)We've admittedly had it good on the whole, and it'll be tougher in some states, but maybe we can make strides against the recent GOP extremism-grabs in places like TX and NC.

(11,464 posts)NO, I do not believe anyone will win in 2016
I believe only Hillary Clinton is a sure shot to win no matter who is the republicantealibertarian candidate.
I believe Deval Patrick or Cory Booker could easily win the 270. I believe Michelle Obama if she were to run this time for President,
could easily win.
However, I think the republicantealibertarian,if its the right one with a good campaign will beat a number of names
being bantered around.
So, if one wants to win, Hillary Clinton/ Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton/ Janet Napolitano, or HIllary Clinton/ Cory Booker or Hillary Clinton/Kathleen Sebelius
etc. can do it.
And the campaign shall be run on the voting rights acts, and on the woman's rights to privacy, and on doing something about guns.
It's not like Jeb Bush or Chris Christie is going to get rid of the defense department, the CIA, the FBI and the NSA and Homeland security. To think that a republican will dismantle that, well, ever hear of republican Peter King? King is the reason KSM wasn't tried in federal court like the President wanted.
Being that 95% of the democratic party strongly supports President Obama and Hillary Clinton, if it's Hillary,
I predict 125 million popular votes and close to 500.
If the president and Hillary are torn down by fracture, I predict Jeb Bush to win.
Remember what the Bush family did to Mike Dukakis in 1988. That is a key year to remember.
And no one was a better liberal democratic candicdate than the great Bostonian, Mike Dukakis, truly one of the great people of the last century.

(2,424 posts)The Republican base despises this surveillance and will use it as a campaign issue against any Democrat that doesn't outright disavow it. Politically, it aligns with the "I hate government" mantra that the regulation hating financial moguls promote. The Democratic nominee will be forced to distance himself from Obama on this as well as other issues. The libertarian wing of the GOP will force this issue "front and center" in the GOP primaries. The Republican candidate will see it as an opportunity to gain ground regardless if he/she only plans on a token gesture of NSA mitigation upon election.
Perhaps Bush started it, but Obama currently owns it. They will relentlessly hammer away on this issue and win sympathy from Independents if the Democratic candidate don't give a compelling reason for perpetuating it. Democratic Senators that have already committed to investigating this, have already declared that there is something wrong with this, will be put on the spot. The perceived division within the Democratic party on this issue will be like throwing bloody chum into shark infested waters. The Republicans will immediately go into a frenzy. Hannity, O'Reilly, and "Fox and Friends" will permanently attach the "surveillance state" from "big evil government" on President Obama and the Democratic party.
Hell yes this is a big deal.
