BART strike to continue another day.

For those who have endured a miserable commute this week because of the BART strike, heading to Fourth of July festivities around the Bay Area may be just as chaotic.

In San Francisco, about 200,000 people are expected at the northern waterfront to watch the fireworks display and the start of nearly three months of America's Cup racing. Across the bay, the Oakland Athletics are expecting near-sellouts for their home series against the Chicago Cubs.

Getting to those events, or any other event that normally involves mass transit, could be a challenge if the BART strike stretches to Thursday. Event planners are still encouraging revelers to come, but recommend they take other transit, carpool or at least check 511.org before heading to their destination Thursday.

"Obviously, the BART strike is going to throw a monkey wrench into all of it," said Troy Campbell, executive director of the Fisherman's Wharf Community Benefit District, where thousands typically watch the fireworks and live music on July Fourth. "I don't know how large the effect will be, but I definitely think it will affect a lot of people who need BART to get here from the East Bay."

Either there will be giant frustration trying to get to and from the fireworks, or there will be greatly reduced attendance. That's a day where people really almost half to take public transportation-- there just isn't anywhere enough parking around there.
