These are the teenage girls who were murdered alongside their mother for apparently dishonouring their family by allowing themselves to be filmed playing and dancing in the rain.
Noor Basra and Noor Sheza, aged 15 and 16, died last Sunday when five masked men burst into their home in the northern Pakistan region of Gilgit and began firing. Their mother Noshehra was also killed in the attack.
Police believe the girls stepbrother Khutore interpreted the video as an assault on the honour of his family and tried to restore the familys honour by killing them.

(50,993 posts)people. Right here at home, we have laws that force women to have things shoved up them against their will.
It's too easy to blame it on religion. Religion is just a front for a much more basic hatred.

(58,724 posts)Is murdering girls for dancing a common feature among religions?
I know that orthodox/fundamentalist Judaism/Christianity promote "modesty" and the like with respect to women, but have there been, over the last ten years say, any cases of killing teenage girls for dancing being justified along religious lines within those faiths?
Additionally, does the religious tradition of Buddhism (4th most popular religions around the world) provide justifications for such behavior as well?

(775 posts)The fact is that Christianity and Judaism were infected with secular values. The Middle East was very enlightened centuries ago. Unfortunately, they entered a dark ages as we entered an enlightenment.
Not everyone who is a Muslim hates women.

(58,724 posts)I certainly don't by any stretch of the imagination think that everyone who is a Muslim hates women.
I do think that there are some features of the texts that serve as the foundation of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism that provide justification for those who wish to subjugate women in this fashion.
I do not think this is a feature of all religions, and, as an example of a major world religion that does not appear to have such a foundation, I name Buddhism. I believe it is reasonable to assume there are others.
I also believe that secular values have had an impact on the Islam, Christianity, and Judaism to varying degrees.
I just don't believe it is fair to condemn all religion en masse in relation to this tragedy.

(2,977 posts)My girls got to dance in the rain, with way less clothing, by the time they were 2.1/2 years old. What f'cking harmless fun. I suspect a video that he could watch over and over, was causing the brother unjust temptations?
Jeez...
