President Obama needs to respond to Morsi

"The presidency indicated that it viewed the statement as a coup d'etat, and implied that Morsi was safe as long as his administration still had US support."

Morsi has effectively said, "The US is on my side." Morsi is trying to drive a wedge between Obama and the protesters thus forcing Obama to support his regime explicitly or, at least, implicitly by remaining silent. This would go far in robbing the protesters of any legitimacy. And if the protesters prevail in spite of US support for Morsi, or mere US silence, then those who assume power will distrust the US. A diplomatic poison pill, if you will.

If, however, Obama makes any statements in favor of the pro-democracy movement Morsi will hang the uncertain repercussions around the President's neck and my money is on Morsi banking Obama will be uncertainty-adverse.
