Killer Arizona wildfire turns more ferocious; new crews called in

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Driven by fierce and erratic winds, the Arizona wildfire that killed 19 firefighters had more than quadrupled in size by Monday morning, with no containment in sight.

As of 7:30 a.m., the Yarnell Hill fire had grown to 8,374 acres, prompting fire officials to double the number of firefighters battling the blaze, said Dennis Godfrey, a Bureau of Land Management spokesman assigned to the fire. The fire's size was estimated at 2,000 acres late Sunday night.

Currently, there are 200 firefighters on the scene. Fire crews, including more elite hotshot crews, are on their way from all over the West, officials said.

No additional evacuations were ordered. Officials said all residents within the fire’s predicted path have already been asked to leave the area.
