Bearing in mind that you voted for Obama on the back of getting rid of the kind of dirty, slithering, clandestine soul-fuckery that Bush and his nest of scorpions put in place... how do you feel about that?

They have no right to collect this information in the first place. Faux "protections" for ACCESSING it after the fact are the manipulative arguments of con men. It is like saying we can put a camera in every house as long as we promise not to turn it on.
Spare us the propaganda.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Don't entertain this garbage.

Note that I mean Obama's NDAA section 1021, indefinite detention of US citizens with neither trial nor representation. YOU, you're a terrorist, off you go.

The tools of police state repression are in place right now. Corporations and politicians are obviously champing at the bit to use them on US citizens. How long until they do?

(7,804 posts)Well, yeah.
Scary, huh?
Tools have a tendency to attract purposes for which they were not originally intended. "Security" will be replaced with "Stability" over the next few years, I'm sure.

(55,981 posts)Need I remind you that the programs are the same, the operators are the same, the leaders are the same that worked for Bush.
We are at a great disadvantage as long as people keep thinking that this war is between Dem's and Repukes. It's not. Clapper is a lying Republican. Why did Pres Obama appoint him with the blessing of the REpublican Party? Because he had no choice. The intelligence state is bigger than the president. The war is between the 1% elite oligarchs and us peons. The oligarchs have access to the spy program.
When Obama became president, I bet he was told that our intelligence communities had a great program and if he dared mess with it and we experienced a terrorist strike, he would be holding the bag. He was given no choice but to continue the Bush spy programs with Bush's guys running them.
With respect to the intelligence community and Wall Street, the president is merely a figurehead.

(19,991 posts)As the "business party," Republicans are especially notorious for the kind of cronyism that goes on behind closed doors in the private sector. I can imagine a scenario in which they appoint the head of the NSA, who in turn hires people into key management positions, who together gather intelligence on their political enemies. Nixon on steroids.
