Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie cover New Yorker’s gay marriage issue

‘Sesame Street’ stars Ernie and Bert are on the cover of The New Yorker‘s gay marriage issue. The cover photo shows the puppets snuggling together on the court watching a television report about the Supreme Court overturning the Defense of Marriage Act.

It seems that Jack Hunter, the illustrator for the cover, knew that there would be some controversy over the cover, so he wrote a statement about it on The New Yorker‘s website:

“It’s amazing to witness how attitudes on gay rights have evolved in my lifetime. This is great for our kids, a moment we can all celebrate.”

Of course, there will be a big debate over whether Bert and Ernie should appear alongside a controversial topic, especially since their characters were created for pre-schoolers and some parents want to shelter their kids from the real world.

It’s long been assumed, by those who have extra time on their hands to think about things like this, that Bert and Ernie are gay just because they live together.

However, back in 2011, Sesame Street Workshop stated that the puppets are “best friends” and “even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics … they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.”
