Conservative columnist: Disband Detroit's City Council

This is NOT from The Onion:

Charles Pugh's MIA, everyone's quitting. . . can we please just disband Detroit City Council?

Last week, elderly race-baiter Kwame Kenyatta said adieu. Ken Cockrel has announced that this will be his last term, Gary Brown is expected to take a job with Kevyn Orr’s office, and JoAnn Watson says she’s not interested in running again. Council President Charles Pugh has been MIA for some time, having missed two consecutive sessions of the full Council without explanation.

At this point, the Detroit City Council is looking an awful lot like the Beatles in mid-implosion. Everyone’s squabbling, nothing’s getting done, and each member is wandering aimlessly, offering conflicting messages about the future. The difference is that the Beatles managed to accomplish something before their split. The Council has been treading water for decades.

<SNIP>

So here’s an idea. When the Council meets Wednesday, they should take a cue from the Fab Four and end the bickering with a breakup. Put the chairs on the table, turn off the lights, and lock the door as they leave. Do what Kevyn Orr should have done on day one.

The Council members can stop humiliating themselves, and the city can save some money. Everybody wins.

It’s time for Council to stop embarrassing Detroit, and end its self-serving distractions.

How utterly fascist is THAT?

The sad truth is, Detroit has suffered from some bad, even corrupt, elected officials. Kilpatrick, Conyers, and now the embarrassment with Charles Pugh (a man I used to have a lot of respect for) allegedly having improper contact with a 17 year old student.

But it is not up to people outside of the city of Detroit to appoint their leaders. My hope is that somehow, despite the 10 ton pile of dog crap they have to deal with (overwhelming deficits, crime, suburban and worldwide racism), that some good, honorable people step up and run for elected positions in "The City".

Yet, nobody suggests disbanding their city councils.

Funny how that works.
