(42,770 posts)thru the TV, I would have done it.
He takes the SC ruling as vindication that there is no racism in the voting process
Bullshit.
Go Donny Deutsch !
He is EXACTLY right. Abuse of power to suppress people with no power by making it difficult to vote

(269,054 posts)I wish Wendy Davis would tell Joe Scum to stop the ReTHUG talking points. This is sickening and the rest of the group are allowing him to dominate the so called discussion.
Sher finally told him about the constitution.

(42,770 posts)I thought she would be much more assertive and succinct about what will happen in TX. She is very mild
mannered for sure. Guess on the other hand, no one can say she's a crazy leftie. haha
She really did skirt the question about "what's next". But, I heard her on the news yesterday and she said
the only way they got away with what they did was because the repukes made a mistake and it was end of session.
Man, must be really hard to be a dem in TX legislature.

(63,912 posts)He looked totally disgusted and pissed off at what Joe was saying. Josh Greene was pushing back as was Gene Robinson. Joe was swinging wildly and cynically. He knows full well that claiming to call for all states to be covered for pre-clearance requires congressional action and he admitted, at the very end, that that wasn't going to happen with this Congress. Pretty goddamned snotty of the guy...

(7,288 posts)and work over at f*ck's news with the rest of the morons... He farts their talking points in his sleep and belches them when he's awake so what's he bloody well waiting for?

(42,770 posts)any dem leaning person on the panel who will actually stand up against him and be articulate. Every single one of them is just too mild mannered and wimpy. And Mika's schtick is sickening to me.

(7,288 posts)consistent as always in her failure to impress ... I wonder if she fears ending up dead in Joe's office?

(70,711 posts)She was making the point of the optics of a bunch of White Rethug Males ganging up on a woman and said it was like an image of a rape, and Joe Scum went ballistic, yelling that she was "overreaching" and otherwise ignoring what HIS own main point was, being that THE MEDIA was making a big deal over DAVIS but if it were an anti-Choice nut talking the nut would be not covered, and he kept repeating this asinine point, talking over and talking down at SNYDER MYERS. Btw, Mika Mouse never chimed in at all.
The irony was DRIPPING: He knee-jerk reacted to the description of Wingnut misogyny BY BEATING UP ON A WOMAN. Wingnuts got no nuance to them!1

(10,893 posts)Anytime you call out racism, then that means you are being offensive.
As to the poster upthread who said that he should be on FOX, that probably won't work because I have seen some RWNJs who even consider him to be a RINO. I don't think the far-right likes Joe "Blow" Scarborough too much.

(5,810 posts)overlooks the fact that OVERT racism is less prevalent. But it is STILL there. I have lived in the South all of my life. Born in Jackson, MS during the time of MLK and Medgar Evers. I was a young teen but I still remember the environment of segregated schools, white only water fountains and poll taxes designed to deny voting to the African American population. I lived a couple of years in Ft. Worth, TX before moving back to Mississippi. I have lived along the Gulf Coast since then in Mobile, AL and Pensacola, FL. (Yes, I had to suffer through the years that Joe was my Rep. in Congress. Blick!)
We no longer live with open, naked racism because people have gotten savvy to what is OK and what is NOT OK to say or do. In other words, their racism is just better concealed. Before I retired I worked with people----Caucasian, African American, Hispanic and Asia American. We often ate our lunch together in a common dining area. The conversations were ALWAYS different when we all were present versus when the African American workers were not present. At those times when it was all white, the language and subject matter was always more openly racist. Negative comments regarding the African American employees were used that were blatantly racist, stereotypical remarks.
My way to describe it would be that they talked in Code. In other words, they would talk in a way that another white person would recognize as meaning another term that they would not say out loud, but was meant to be racial. They were often somewhat guarded in how they phrased things but anyone "in the know" knew what they meant.
So Joe's assertion that the world is not like it was in 1965 is only partially correct. Some things are better, but racist attitudes and behavior still exists, even in his beloved hometown of Pensacola, FL. Protection for the disenfranchised or those who might be disenfranchised needs to be in place.
Maybe at some point in time, when the generation of people who still hold racist attitudes are long gone, it won't be necessary to have a Voting Rights Act. Until that day comes (and it is obvious to all), it needs to stay firmly in place.
Since I have not lived outside of the south, I am not prepared to suggest that racism exists in other areas, but would be willing to guess that it does since we are a very mobile society and there have been racially motivated incidents in areas outside of the south. Others can speak to that issue of where and how pervasive racism is in other parts of the country.
