'Man of Steel' filled with Jesus, Christianity references (Fox News - LOL)

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s … Jesus?

There is some Christ-like imagery planted throughout “Man of Steel.” One blaring symbol occurs during a climactic battle: Superman jumps from General Zod’s (Michael Shannon) ship and hovers in the sky with his arms out-stretched like the crucifix. Freeze-frame it and you can have your own Superman prayer card.

Kal-El says he is 33, a not-too-subtle reference to the same age as Jesus Christ when he was crucified.

The Passion of Superman. Kal-El is more than willing to sacrifice himself to save the people of Earth. Originally reluctant to reveal his identity and powers to the world, Supes decides to turn himself over to Zod to save humanity from annihilation.

Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark’s adoptive father, is somewhat like Jesus’ adoptive dad, Joseph. Both are tradesmen: Joseph a carpenter, Jonathan a farmer. Superman’s ship (or manger, if you will) is even kept in the Kent’s stable.

And finally, don’t forget the Holy Trinity. Jor-El returns to Kal-El on Earth as a ghost, guiding his budding superhero son on his journey to salvation. Before Jor-El sends his son off to Earth baby Moses-style, he tells his wife that, like Jesus, “He’ll be a god to them.” With Superman’s seemingly invincible powers, he is.

When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created their iconic comic book hero Superman in 1938, their character wasn’t just a representation of “Truth, Justice and the American Way,” but for many, a metaphor for Jewish immigrants in 1930s America. Created by two young Jewish men, Superman was an allusion to the Jewish faith and history, from his baby Moses-like origins to his golem-esque invincibility, to his outcast status and his ultimate struggle to assimilate in a new land.

But somewhere along his journey since 1938, Kal-El converted to Christianity, which is no more evident than in Zack Snyder’s current “Man of Steel.”

I have not given a thought to these things that you have mentioned here as I was enjoying the movie and I must say that I have enjoyed it a lot. We should not relate any religion with some movie as they are meant for entertainment and for that directors use something like this for making it like real.

is concerned. The imagery is blatant, but it is such a piss poor movie that it fails completely to translate what that may mean in regards to the character. Great effects, terrible story.

But the Christ imagery in MoS is so obvious you roll your eyes...

biblical reference weaved through out it. The Maya 2 Character Animation (ISBN: 0-7357-0866-5) has a great section on the three act process. If you get a copy of it grab it, I use it more for the 3 act process reference than the actual animation information.

Cheers!

my point was that Arabic names whose English translation contains 'El' and a hyphen, such as Mohammed El-Bakkar, are not uncommon, and with Fox's paranoia about supposed threats to Christianity I speculated they would see something sinister Jor-El.

But that article is from Faux News -_-

Based on what I know from the comics it sounds like they are reaching a bit more than usual.

Its possible, again I have not seen the movie, but the evidence they cite are far from convincing. For instance, Goyer like Superman's creators is Jewish.

[div class="excerpt" style="background-color:#dcdcdc; padding-bottom:5px; border:1px solid #bfbfbf; border-bottom:none; border-radius:0.4615em 0.4615em 0em 0em; box-shadow:3px 3px 3px #999999;"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_S._Goyer[div class="excerpt" style="background-color:#f0f0f0; border:1px solid #bfbfbf; border-top:none; border-radius:0em 0em 0.4615em 0.4615em; box-shadow:3px 3px 3px #999999;"]He is Jewish on his mother's side, and attended Hebrew school. He has stated that in the regular school, "a lot kids beat me up, saying that I killed Christ. I was very consciously different... I grew up with something of a chip on my shoulder."[1][2][3]

The part about the cross, every superhero I have ever seen flies like that. The Kents being his adoptive parents is a part of his origin, non-violence is not solely a christian trait (almost all heroes are depicted that way), the natural birth and ghost of his father does not sound anything like Christianity references to me, and Yeshua of Nazareth would not go to a priest for advice but would rather advise the priest.

I am not saying that it is not possible that this might be what the directors intended, but It sounds like a stretch. Maybe when I do get the chance to see it I can understand better, but for now it sounds like faux news is just trying to drum up sales among its viewers to me.

When Clark first puts on the suit to talk to army guys, it looked an awful lot like the transfiguration. The meeting at the end with the doubting Thomas of an officer was an awful lot like post resurrection scene in one of the Gospels. And of course the whole theme of Clark being the salvation of humanity and his holiness through suffering was spread pretty thickly too.

Don't forget. There are only about a dozen really different story themes and that of the Christ figure is one of the best known in the Western world. In point of fact, the Bryan Singer Superman movie was also heavily laid with Christian themes.

I'm not a believer, but I thought this movie was fantastic.

Harry Potter. He was a powerful figure who arose from the dead to save wizards from an evil, powerful wizard. there are fewer linkages to Christianity, but there is still some similarities in theme about good vs evil and fulfilling a destiny.
