June 24, 2013: The national UPS Freight Contract has been overwhelmingly rejected, by rank and file Teamsters who deserve a good contract.
The two-tier deal to create "Line Haul" drivers at essential nonunion wages and conditions has been rejected. The inadequate wages and pension improvements have been rejected.
Teamsters at UPS Freight have taken an important step by standing together in solidarity.
The momentum for a good contract has to keep building.

Among the many give backs Hoffa/Hall made with this new contract is the creation of the Line Haul Driver position at a cut rate of pay. UPS also wants to add another year to the wage progression, making it four years to top out.
This is quite a turn of events after Hoffa bragged about this contract being a huge victory for the Teamsters and claimed that Teamster Locals unanimously approved of it prior to the ballots being sent out. Obviously the rank and file did not agree.
May 24, 2013: Teamsters around the country report the proposed UPS Freight contract fails to measure up. It doesn't even measure up to the first contractone they found sorely lacking over the last five years.
The wage increase is $2.50 over five years$1.50 less than the previous contract. The health insurance plan is modified and members are still expected to pay a premium. The current pension plan is frozen and a new version has been proposed. All this from a company that has cleared billions over the past five years.
A big issue is subcontracting that was killing jobs and undermining our union. For this, the deal proposes Line Haul Driver language that creates a lower tier wage rate and benefits package. It introduces nonunion pay and conditions to a highly profitable union company.

June 24, 2013: Updated 6:00 p.m. The UPS national contract has narrowly passed but Ken Hall and UPS will be returning to the bargaining table because 17 supplements and riders have been rejected, the biggest number in Teamster history.
What's next for UPS Teamsters, our contract and the healthcare cuts?
The UPS national contract passed narrowly, with a 53% Yes vote likely when the final ballots are counted. But it has been rejected in 17 supplements and riders the latest one is the largest the Central Region supplement.
The contract passed because of Yes majorities in the Southern Region, the Atlantic Supplement and New England. In those three areas Yes votes had a 11,941 vote majority. In the rest of the country, No votes will end up with a strong majority, rejecting the contract by about 7,000 votes.

This contract is the largest CBA in North America. If this many Union members at a company making billions every year make concessions, it will mean lowering standards for all workers. These workers set the bar for the rest of us. Their contract needs to be a good one.
The national contract cannot be signed at this point, because re-negotiation and re-vote is required for each of the rejected supplements and riders. Legally, the contract is one integrated agreement, not separate national and regional contracts. This legal principle has long been recognized by both UPS and the union.
Under the Teamster Constitution, the national leadership (Hoffa-Hall) must work with all the supplemental committees to get an agreement acceptable to members. That is not going to be easy, especially in areas where they have been overwhelmingly rejected.
A large majority of UPS Teamsters will be voting again. And maybe more than once. If a supplement or rider is rejected a third time, that will be a strike vote. UPS does not want to get to that step, giving us bargaining power, if we use it.

I am proud of them for standing up for themselves and in a sense, for the rest of us. Especially the LTL Freight division rejecting their proposed agreement in it's entirety.
