"Anti-war activists who were infiltrated and spied on by the military for years have now been placed on the domestic terrorist list, they recently discovered. The shocking revelation comes as the activists prepare to sue the U.S. military for unlawful spying.
"The fact that a peaceful activist such as myself is on this domestic terrorist list should be cause for concern for other people in the US," declared Brendan Maslauskas Dunn, plaintiff in the lawsuit. "We've seen an increase in the buildup of a mass surveillance state under the Obama and Bush Administrations."
The discovery is the latest development in a stunning sauga that exposes vast post-9/11 spying networks in which military, police, and federal agencies act in cahoots."

(112 posts)I believe this is our fault because we took the pressure off when Obama took the helm...dems have rolled over and I bet the military is much happier with Obama as president because the effectively have no opposition any longer (regardless of the McCrystal comments). Pretty smart move to let Obama win so we all assume things are fine.

(28,784 posts)as in "this is the end of this period of overreach."
Your version is more like "late-stage capitalism," with all the nastiness of empire-crumbling that implies.
I'm not too optimistic about our govt. at this point. This entire surveillance apparatus is out-of-control and, if allowed to stand, will lead to a horrid future.

(20,899 posts)rather than as lawful citizens who have exercised their 1st Amendment right to express their grievances to government. One wonders if the plethora of gun-toting domestic right-wing extremist/militia groups generally make the cut as domestic terrorists. Nah, probably not since big brother is not gonna hassle those who exercise their 2nd Amendment rights which are both sacrosanct and absolute and probably not worry about piffles such as sedition, anarchy, and the like.

(4,015 posts)No, no, there isn't a problem with a national security state/industry gone wild.
No, no, the US isn't going the way of every empire before it...
This is all legal. Other countries do it too. Why are you so un-american to only post stories about infiltration of Americans? You damn well know that the Iranians and Chinese are doing it too!
Those protesters planned their protests. That is premedeated. There's no excuse for that. They're aiding our red /and brown) enemies.
Protestors have no honor. They had it coming. I mean, what do they expect.
And Duh. As long as we spy on protestors democracy is safe - you may have a point, but only after there aren't any protestors anymore. Until that date, stop BEING OUTRAGED!!!
"Apologist", dear apologists, is used here in its most descriptive sense, please don't read it as normative (i.e. a call out). It's just that I miss you folks in these threads.

(3,183 posts)"The breadth and intensity of the spying by U.S. Army officials and other law enforcement agents is staggering," said Larry Hildes, National Lawyers Guild attorney who filed the lawsuit in 2009. "If nonviolent protest is now labeled and treated as terrorism, then democracy and the First Amendment are in critical danger."
