Rape of Iraqi Women by US Forces as Weapons of War: Photos and Data Emerge

WARNING: GRAPHIC/DISTURBING IMAGES IN THE LINK TO THE ORIGINAL STORY

At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee.

Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire and a phosphorescent tube.

Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.

Detail of the content emerged from Major General Antonio Taguba, the former army officer who conducted an inquiry into the Abu Ghraib jail in Iraq.

Allegations of rape and abuse were included in his 2004 report but the fact there were photographs was never revealed. He later confirmed their existence in an interview with the Daily Telegraph in May 2009.

The London newspaper further noted “graphic nature of some of the images may explain the US President Obama’s attempts to block the release of an estimated 2,000 photographs from prisons in Iraq and Afghanistan despite an earlier promise to allow them to be published.

The original story can be found here at this link, and as I've noted at the beginning, the pictures are very graphic.

Not that the Syrians will notice much difference, I suspect. Their conflict is already pretty awful.

that notes were being passed outside the women's section of Abu Ghraib asking outsiders to bomb the prison to stop what was being done to them inside.

War crimes. American war crimes that we need to be held accountable for. I hope I live long enough to see that day.

myself, I hope it DOES NOT happen within my lifetime.

But it will happen - USA will pay dearly for all its war crimes -

You just can't go around the World, invading them, slaughtering them, and not expect payback.

it's coming - not too soon I hope.

I was one of the people who tried to get the word out that the torture orders were coming from the top. Even here at DU< I encountered huge pushback- lots of people didn't want to believe this was anything other than an isolated issue.

I couldn't believe they picked 2 women to take the fall for it. Good on Karpinski for not going quietly on this issue.
