Man aiming at caged raccoon shoots himself in leg

Authorities say a 45-year-old northwest Iowa man who was trying to shoot a caged raccoon accidentally shot himself.

The Sioux City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/10fw7ga) the accident occurred a little before 10 a.m. Sunday at Copeland Park in Correctionville.

Woodbury County Sheriff's Maj. Greg Stallman says Tim McCormick had set out traps at his home in Correctionville and caught a raccoon. Stallman says McCormick took the caged raccoon to the park to shoot it, but instead accidentally fired his .38 caliber revolver into his left leg.

He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. The uninjured raccoon was released back into the woods.

The shooting is being investigated.

That being said, my friend's cat Tigger, just went the rounds with one, and he's a wreck. Kitty had to be shaved nearly bald and and practically had to have his tail sewed back on. I'd get you a picture but they are traveling.

It is good advice not to leave your catfood outside for your pet. It may attract visitors.

One of my friends has talked about trapping them to relocate them away from her chickens. It was years ago in Oregon. She is the one who told me they hiss and spit like mad cats. She wasn't particularly fond of these creatures.

I like how they wash their food first, before eating it.

night, she ate later than usual, so my cats were already in and did not finish what she left. I started out to get the plate, but stopped when I saw a young opossum dining on what was left.

It was still young, but those things are viscious! And they have loonng teeth. I left the possum to it.

I'm using a water gun. I got the raccoon right in the face a couple of times. He waited until I went to sleep, ate the bird seed, knocked over the water bowl and pooped my raspberry seeds on the deck! They are very vindictive!

So now I empty the seed and water dishes right at sunset when the birds have gone to the trees.

The squirrels are persistent but fewer are coming back each day. I'm including this as my exercise program!

But they are down right destructive to my bird feeder. My feeder is a cute wooden house that is decorated as a bait shop. The squirrels lay in the branches next to it and scoop the seeds into their cheeks. When it runs out they chew the bobbers and tackle off the sides. I find the pieces on the ground.

Furry fuckers. Good thing I think they are cute.

I hope it hurt like hell. We had problems with raccoons several years ago - little twerps pulled up some of our shake shingle roof and made themselves at home in the attic. We bought Have-a-Heart traps and took them out of the city limits and released them in the woods.

I can't imagine someone being so cruel as to shoot a caged animal.

A while back after reading gun enthusiasts rail on about how a modern dropped gun doesn’t fire, I did a quick search on google and discovered a few that had. Included was this one.
By Mark Berman Opposing Views, Tue, February 28, 2012 It seems that a raccoon got caught in a trap in the rural town of Redfield Saturday morning, so 68-year-old Larry Godwin decided to shoot it. Well, the first shot ricocheted off of the cage and hit Godwin in the lower abdomen area. He then dropped his gun and it went off again, hitting him in about the same spot. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating, likely to make sure that the man is telling the truth and that the raccoon did not somehow wrestle the gun away from the man and shoot him itself. http://www.opposingviews.com/i/society/animal-rights/man-shoots-self-twice-trying-kill-caged-raccoon
