Hong Kong let Snowden go after US bungling, but Washington makes a face

The United States is disappointed by Hong Kong's “troubling'' failure to arrest Edward Snowden before he fled the territory, an official said Sunday. He is reported to have now landed in Moscow on his way to Ecuador. He left Hng Kong on Aeroflot flight SU213.

A Department of Justice spokesperson insisted US officials had fulfilled all requirements of Washington's extradition treaty with the city and were “disappointed'' by the decision to let him go.

Hong Kong said in a statement yesterday at 4:05 pm that the “documents provided by the US Government did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law, the HKSAR Government has requested the US Government to provide additional information so that the Department of Justice could consider whether the US Government's request can meet the relevant legal conditions.’’ It added that since “sufficient information to process the request for provisional warrant of arrest,’’ was not available, “there is no legal basis to restrict Mr Snowden from leaving Hong Kong.’’
