DNI and ex-Booz Allen VP James Clapper: Iraq 'unquestionably' moved its WMD to Syria

This is the level of genius who is now the Director of National Intelligence.

Liberal critics are pointing out that Clapper, while serving as the head of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency, helped assist the Bush administration lie that Iraq possessed illegal weapons of mass destruction. Speaking to reporters in October 2003, Clapper suggested that the illicit weapons had “unquestionably” been moved to Syria:

The official, James R. Clapper Jr., a retired lieutenant general, said satellite imagery showing a heavy flow of traffic from Iraq into Syria, just before the American invasion in March, led him to believe that illicit weapons material “unquestionably” had been moved out of Iraq. [...]

He said he was providing a personal assessment. But he said “the obvious conclusion one draws” was that there “may have been people leaving the scene, fleeing Iraq, and unquestionably, I am sure, material.” A spokesman for General Clapper’s agency, David Burpee, said he could not provide further evidence to support the general’s statement.

Former Bush adviser Karl Rove cites Clapper’s theory in his book Courage and Consequence to defend claims by the Bush administration that it believed Iraq posed an imminent security threat to the United States.

That, of course, was after he spent some quality time as a Booz Allen vice-president from 1997 to 1998.

Involved in the fight of their lives, trying to defend their homes, moms, wives and kiddies against the Great Satan, Iraq shipped their weapons to Syria?

Good gawd.

This guy needs to be Cheney's bunkie at Leavenworth.

Tis a briliant statement, actually.
See, if Iraq moved the weapons to Syria, that means the attack on Iraq for having WMD was valid.
And now that we know the WMD are in Syria, an attack on Syria will be valid.
After which we will be told that Syria moved the WD to whatever other country we want to attack for having them.

Genius...sheer genius.

WMDs were moved there, and right as we are preparing to pull out of Afghanistan. Permanent war, guaranteed.

Boy, those Iraqi WMDs have provided a lot of profitable opportunities for our military/industrial industry.

I want to know if the President asks questions and is lied to or if he even bothers to ask questions. He has always struck me as too cool to be curious.

among which was the Bubonic Plague. Does that count?

Actually, someone well placed told me at the time Saddam had moved his WMD to Syria when he realized he was in fact going to be invaded. I responded, "Well, makes a lot of sense to me. Here he was the head of a small country but also a person who had tried to kill George W. Bush's* father. He hears the strongest military in the world, led by the elder Bush's son, is coming to get him. So what does he do? He moves the most potent weapons he has to defend himself out of the country. Right." He had no response.

then he had no WMD and we should have invaded Syria, which had WMD, but knowingly invaded the country that didn't have WMD instead. Therefore, Clapper has admitted that the war was not about WMD.
