"she freely admitted to using the N-word"

I don't know much about this story or the context of the deposition, but I saw that line in an article about Paula Deen - who barely registered on my "who is she" meter.

Anyway.... when you are being deposed under oath and asked a question, unless the answer would incriminate you, you have to answer the question and you have to do so truthfully.

So, whatever one makes of what she said or what it means, it wasn't "freely admitted".

Whatever else she may be, she's apparently honest.

The Food Channel won't be renewing her contract when it expires in July.

If you want the gist in a nutshell, this explains it better than I've seen anywhere. Enjoy :

That was hilarious--and you are right, it does hit the high points (or the low points, more accurately).

I can see why the channel is just saying "OK, good run, enough, now." She's probably hemorrhaging viewers, costs too much in terms of salary and production values, and she's just not a cost-effective fit.

They'll probably go with someone with a more youthful and fresh approach, who works for much less. Or maybe they'll rerun Julia Childs' old shows--those were always fun. Or the Galloping Gourmet, who was likewise always entertaining.

I've only seen her whenever she appeared on another Food Channel show. Her high-pitched drawl seems exaggerated & is too overbearing for me. Kristen Wiig's imitation of her is a classic.

I read in an article that she has a six-figure contract with a pharmaceutical company to promote a diabetic medication, that it was a deal made without the Food Channel's knowledge & they probably weren't happy about that. I guess it doesn't reflect well on them to have a tv show that promoted a lot of fatty foods when the cook has Type 2 Diabetes.

It seemed clear to me that she didn't know any better & that it comes from the culture from which she grew up. I live in the Deep South, her state is more northeastern than mine, yet she has the stereotypical attitude northerners expect from the South that I don't see where I live.

She could be sincere and feel just terrible, she might not harbor prejudice, she could have been raised wrong by Mister and Mrs. Kaykaykay...I just do not know. What I do know is that she's had a good run. She had that show all those years, she sold pots and pans, she has a restaurant or two or three, and she's in her middle sixties. Between pushing the butter-sugar-marshmallow-cheesecake-w/syrup stuff while concealing her diabetes, and the fighting in her restaurant, and the sideline deal with Big Pharma, and now, this ... er... "nutrition" word business, she's on the surfboard and flying over that shark. Time to step back, maybe focus on something a little more personal and private. I know she loves her "brand," but Martha Stewart did, too, and she had to go to jail.

I hope she's been smart with her money, so she can afford to retire a bit early. If not, she's just going to have to--pardon the expression--tighten her belt.
