Could Riots Really Prompt FIFA To Take the World Cup Away from Brazil?

As the FIFA Confederations Cup continues, so do the protests. And as the tournament progresses, the demonstrations are becoming bigger and more violent.

But are the protests enough of a problem that FIFA would call off the Confederations Cup? Or, worse, would FIFA take next year's World Cup away from Brazil?

Both are unlikely, but FIFA would be wise to monitor the situation closely.

IIRC, in Egypt it got really ugly when the fans of various soccer clubs started attacking each other.

They're paid for by their own countries, wherever the finals are held. The money will go into rebuilding or renovating stadia, and the logistics of the period - supporters coming to the country, broadcasters setting up facilities, and so on. It means a lot of money coming into the country - the question is whether the taxpayer money spent to make it happen is worthwhile. Some businessmen will make big profits; some people will get decent employment, for a time.

Those were not riots, and these are neither, until the riot police charges.

That's a convenient forgotten detail.

Who would they give them to? Few countries have the infrastructure in place to host the WC in one year's time. Maybe Germany, for example. But do the Germans want it on such short notice? Would they be ready on time? The decision as to who will host the WC is done 6 years ahead of the event. That gives the host country time to (re-)build stadiums, organise security, get transport provisions into place etc etc. The Germans are probably as good as it gets, but I doubt that they'd want it.

... but they did so in 1982.

I think only the U.S. and some recent hosts that still have their stadiums could pull it off on such short notice.

It's not just stadiums, it's also transport, security, ticketing, travel...I'm sure the US/France/Germany could do a decent job. But it'd be a nightmare at short notice.

teams are.

it was a huge risk when they awarded the games to brazil in the first place

if would be a huge blow to brazils world image if they lost the cup.
lets hope it does not happen
