&feature=BFa&list=TLVj6wfEYz8PQ&lf=artistobIt was 1988 in the middle of the aftermath of hurricane Gilbert and I was trying to finish my paper to present at a conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the Ben Johnson disqualification and Flo Joe Olympics and of course there was Bobby McFerrin telling us Don't Worry be Happy.
I headed to my sister's home in Miami for some electricity
One Moment in Time , Don't Worry be Happy, mom and the kids kept me going.
R.I.P. Whitney - you had your moment in time. Finally you are at peace.

(36,223 posts)I was always in awe of her voice. And I learned something I did not know, that the song I Will Always Love You, was written by Dolly Parton and she sang it in the movie "Best Little Whorehouse in TX". And that it was a huge country hit.
Here is Dolly singing it:
Here is Whitney singing it. Whitney made it a true cross over single.

Dolly Parton is a true class act. Here is what Dolly said upon learning of Whitney's passing:

(269,157 posts)It may seem strange but rural Jamaicans love C&W music.
There was a time when I wished I never had to hear that song again in my lifetime.
I was indifferent to both versions.

(36,223 posts)that I do feel it was overplayed on the radio.
malaise
(269,157 posts)It was the song of choice at weddings as well. Overplayed is a euphemism

(36,223 posts)complimenting Whitney, but I'm beginning to think it was more of a dis.
Is that correct?
malaise
(269,157 posts)but she never made the impression on me that she did for much younger folks.
There was always something missing for me - perhaps it was the absence of soul.
Funny it was the same thing with her aunt - I loved her songs but they were devoid of soul.

(36,223 posts)I loved Dionne Warwick too, but Whitney was better!

(6,336 posts)I knew I Will Always Love You was orignially Dolly Parton's song too, but I have never heard the Dolly and Whitney sing the song back to back.
IMO I think Whitney did a better job with the song.

(6,996 posts)Other singers have tried to duplicate her but failed IMO. Where they sound harsh Whitney Houston always sounded glorious.
RIP

(36,223 posts)I have always felt she was one of the greats. Yes, she had a terrible decade, but I grew up with her songs, and truly I don't think there will be another like her in my lifetime.
She is right up there with Elvis, imho.
malaise
(269,157 posts)but she never made my top ten female singers list.

(37,573 posts)I remember seeing a news story about a girl who blew people away singing a song at the Olympics. The story opened talking about her song there and then it said "now she is looking for a manager" and it showed her, working as a supermarket checker saying "can I get a manager?"
Now a google search is not giving me a name or a song. I cannot remember the year or the song.
That young lady, however, only had one moment in time. Less than 15 minutes of fame, and when she passes, her passing will not be noted or mourned by the whole nation, nor by a confederacy of other famous people.
