we ARE the government. We've decided to do this and a number of other things through our elected representatives. Some surveillance is certainly helpful.

But in the future, assume those in power (Rs & Ds) want to be above the people. Spying would be a very useful tool in making sure the people are not able to elect replacements. It would be very useful to shut down the tea parties, or progressive parties, or any other party before they even get close to a significant size. Once they have the patterns to identify a potential party forming, they can harass/frame/blackmail the leaders enough to keep them from making progress.

That is why spying is not acceptable. It has nothing to do with me not wanting the government to know what medical problems I have, or the IRS to know what lifestyle I'm leading, or even if I'm having an affair. It's about whether the government can find out those things about the future leader who would be able to take the government back for the people if only the government doesn't stop him/her before developing a following. One thing I can do to help that person is to demand my privacy even though I have nothing to hide.

Didn't someone once write something about innocent until proven guilty?

Where are we living? In the United States of America where you're innocent until proven guilty, or Nazi Germany with the Gestapo calling?

That ain't it, but it'll do.

spying on your own people is going too far.
As a kid growing up in the 50's one of the things we were proud of was that we didn't spy on our people like godless communism did. I remember a picture we were shown in class of kids turning in their parents in Russia for listening to Radio Free Europe. The KGB was breaking into the house the patents had the look of fear on their faces and the children were seen in the background proud of themselves.
Now we have become what we once saw as evil in communism.

I want our government to spy on white supremacists and militia groups who want to overthrow the government. But I don't think they should spy on the local library. I kinda don't have a problem with them collecting phone numbers to be checked with calls made to or receive calls from foreign countries. But would have a problem of wholesale collection of phone conversations, unless a connection is made with calls coming in from or to a foreign country with known terrorists activities. I haven't settled my mind yet, but also mindful of the short leap to complete surveillance of citizens. As you can see I'm in a kerfuffle lol
