Neocon reaction to NSA scandal is interesting
First of all, I'm not making a guilt-by-association argument. Someone made a very good point by pointing out that the Nazi website Stormfront shares my opposition to the spying. OK? So when I point out the neocon reaction is to defend the program, I'm not saying that makes it the wrong position.
That said, the neocons are probably the faction that is most upset by these revelations. Not by the program, but by the revelations.
I think I have identified their primary message, they seem to be pounding away at it: "Don't worry about NSA, go back to the IRS scandal. We must separate the two issues." Look out for that word "separate", I think it is in their talking points.
Anyone familiar with Frank Gaffney? He is in the running for the least scrupulous neocon out there. A total liar. A total Islamophobe. Willing to launch the most scurrilous smears against Obama to advance his agenda. Two notches below William Kristol, who is no prize himself.
And there he is on CNBC defending this program. He is obviously anguished by being in the position of defending the Obama administration, but it is important enough to him that he feels that he must. And it seems the thing that upsets him the most about the IRS scandal is that it hurts Obama's credibility, which puts Gaffney's beloved authoritarian policies at risk.
