(17,216 posts)In natural jurisprudence, which concerns itself with the inalienable rights Thomas Jefferson spoke of in the Constitution, the Big Three are Life, Liberty, and Property. Mr Jefferson altered the last to "pursuit of happiness" because of the slavery issue, but that's a digression. There are, however, many natural rights covered in natural law that Mr Jefferson did not mention, and among these is Liberty of Conscience.
It is worthy of note that all the soi-disant "rights" we cherish so much can be abrogated by the government if they so desire. Life, liberty, property -- or the pursuit of happiness -- can all be suspended, taken away, or limited, providing the government can find sufficient excuse. Only Liberty of Conscience remains inviolate, as the governing bodies have not yet found a way to reliably control the mind of Man. But you can bet they're sure-enough working on it.
