(9,033 posts)Whether or not Snowden is arrested and put on trial, this is stuff the public needs to know about. How can Congress practice oversight on a program most of them are not briefed on and no one can discuss? How can anyone even determine if the program works, that it is not just a busy-work program for the intelligence/industrial complex, that it is not being or cannot be abused? A secret program with secret rules decided upon by a handful of people in secret? That no one can even challenge because it's, you know, secret.
My senator (Mark Udall) has been waving his arms about this for years. But he couldn't do anything, or really say anything, because National Security. And secrets.
I for one am glad Snowden leaked. I for one will be glad if this results in a REAL discussion, and a rewrite or repeal of an overly-permissive and vague law. I personally don't care if this program is legal, I don't think it should be, or at the very least, nobody should be deciding that in secret.
If that was Snowden's motive, more power to him. I hope he has the fortitude to face the consequences but I'm not going to condemn him for not trusting the government. That's what checks and balances were designed to do. In reality where was the check on this program?
