The State Senate passed the bill Wednesday that makes it felony to "harass, annoy, threaten or alarm" an on duty police officer by subjecting them to any physical contact.
A press release from the NYS Senate originally stated, "The bill (S.2402), sponsored by Senator Joe Griffo (R-C-I, Rome) would make it a felony to harass, annoy, or threaten a police officer while on duty." However, as the bill is written, a person would be guilty of aggravated harassment of a police officer if he or she subjected that officer to physical contact with the intent to "harass, annoy, threaten or alarm" that officer.
Oh, this will end well.

(3,891 posts)Why wouldn't it pass muster. All the prosecutor has to say is that by annoying the officer, you are taking him from duties that protect the citizenry, and whamo you're in jail for four long years. The courts haven't yet put a limit on the cops that hasn't been so loosened over the years that this is almost a crime now.
Cops have become the royalty of the modern ear. They can do no wrong, they are above reproach, and how dare you speak ill of the wonderful folks they are.

(21,977 posts)What annoys one officer might not annoy another, so the citizen has no way to know what behavior is prohibited.
It's just that simple.

(2,431 posts)NEVER talk to the police. Never... unless you are looking for a date with one of them.
Nothing good can result from it. Either nothing or something bad will happen.

My sister-in-law was pulled over once for "slightly" exceeding the posted speed limit. She had nearly talked her way out of the ticket; when the officers attention was drawn to her denim vest covered with vintage pin on buttons. The one on her collar read "Support your local Police. Beat yourself up". She paid over two hundred dollars for collecting buttons (via speeding ticket).
If this law had been on the books, she could have spent time in jail for a button.

(15,189 posts)And you may have, but not on purpose. So going to jail is the punishment. If they are so concerned about the safety of cops, they should work toward a gun safe America, and help other states that are stuck on stupid. Maybe pay the cops more and have more training. This is so wrong. Is video taping them harassment too?

(16,855 posts)Everything we do annoys cops. They think the only things we should be allowed to do are go to work or school and go home. Anything else is too much for them to handle. They're perpetually annoyed, and they're always looking for someone to take out their frustrations on.
