Posted by Alli
We would like to apologize for our recent actions that displayed an undeniable insensitivity to persons of color, especially women of color.
As an organization, we strive to speak truth to power and stand for human rights for all. We respect intersectionality and strive to stay aware of the many forms of privilege among our group. We would like to make an unequivocal apology to Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys, and everyone who took offense to messages we posted on Twitter.
By tweeting about how Michelle Obama should have responded to Ellen Sturtzs interruption, we behaved in such a way that reflected a long history of white women dictating how Black women should behave. Our actions were not in keeping with our own values as an organization. While yesterdays interruption was not a CODEPINK action, it is exemplary of CODEPINK tactics, and the way we responded to it was insensitive and thoughtless.
When the process of petitioning, lobbying and writing letters fails, and when mainstream media ignores the real issues, interruptions of high-profile officials are one tactic to make our voices heard. Because it crosses the line of agreed-upon civility, this tactic is always messy.
We appreciate all the people who gave us instant feedback over Twitter and it has been and will continue to be a learning opportunity for CODEPINK. We are immediately reviewing our process and criteria for social media use, as an organization, and we invite any of our our critics to speak with us directly about issues of race and privilege in order to prevent a similar occurrence in the future.
Onward to peace and justice,
The CODEPINK Staff

(22,541 posts)definitely saw and heard those buzzwords that are inappropriate when applied to African American women in particular, it is also an issue that impacts women in general. Code Pink needs to remember that, too. We as women are allowed to stand up for ourselves without being called names. I had thought liberal women were aware of that.
We should be better than this. We are better than this. Code Pink was recently afforded quite a bit of microphone time by the President himself. The ISSUE they wanted heard was heard. And he even emphasized its importance. That is respect.
I was one who responded to Code Pink today. That they could turn HIS respect around and talk about his WIFE like that was a slap in the face to a lot of people.

(8,339 posts)No more respect from me for Code Pink. You support Rand Paul, you heckle the President and First Lady - I'm done with you. Apparently you have no moral center.

(53,661 posts)Thanks for linking to the other thread, ProSense, I appreciate it when you do. Many of your threads are informative but I can't see them otherwise.
It's time for Americans to stop tearing each other up for pure political gain. As far as I know, CODE PINK has thrown in their lot with the Libertarians, who never fail to trash Democrats as the party of good governance, social welfare, against all kinds of discrimination and our belief poverty is not a moral failing but a societal one demanding that government act for equality.
We want a level playing field for social mobility and it requires government to rein in predatory capitalists and religious zealots. Libertarians don't have problems with either of those, wanting all social needs to be by charity and church as in the old days.
They don't believe in a social contract, yet most Americans believe that we are one people and should have equality, both in civil rights and economically.
Their stances on gays doesn't overshadow their silence on women. Their stance against war is flawed, as many make money in that sector. Their hypocrisy of not paying taxes as they make money off federal and state contracts is abhorrent.
They would allow people to work for nothing, they are not for unions, they would allow any discrimination if it hides behind private property rights. They were set up by the Koch family and the end result of their ideology is fascism.
They don't believe they should pay taxes despite the gross inequalities this nation has always suffered or to be regulated or forced to treat others fairly. They see the evil government as the sole cause of oppression, like the Koches do. But don't see the oppression of the wealth and churches. That must be for the 'other' people.
I'm not amused by they or their teabagger, Ron and Rand Paul and Paul Ryan buddies and their plans for our Constitution and the majority of Americans.
No, not at all.
But an apology, if sincere and not backhanded like Rush, is a good thing. I guess, since I'm only going by what the OP says.
In reference to this statement:
When the process of petitioning, lobbying and writing letters fails,
If they did, fine and dandy. But they did not include voting the teabaggers out.
and when mainstream media ignores the real issues,
Obama does not own the mainstream media.
Obama did not ignore real issues. Period.
interruptions of high-profile officials are one tactic to make our voices heard.
Why don't they interrupt the lying media instead of giving it more fodder to spin?
And what is the current version CODE PINK anyway, when they drool over Rand Paul on one issue, but IGNORE all the rest he stands for?
Such as to take away women's rights to control their bodies and lives with personhood bills and passing bills to end Planned Parenthood, threatening to shut down the government for that?
Knowing that will kill the poor and disabled and starve people and make their lives miserable, while conducting his side show of a civil libertarian circus while denying people the right to live?
Why gush and fuss over a man who is doing that to Americans daily, who wants to eliminate food stamps, school lunches, aid to pregnant women, Head Start, Meals on Wheels, the DOE that enforces the rights of women, disabled and disadvantaged in school, the EPA, etc.
Who is against protecting native and LGBTs with the VAWA, who wants to eliminate Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, worker and voting rights? Who is part of the cabal that votes for military spending, against gun control, for the oil, fracking and mining industries?
Exactly what kind of PINK is CODE PINK, are they 'Komen pink ribbon' pink, who want Planned Parenthood gone along with their hero Rand Paul, and the rest of the fundies?
Who want, like Libertarians to end all taxes, starve the beast, and allow everything in this country to be turned over to the Koch brothers and their kind?
What kind of peace and justice are they imagining, when they don't care about those poor people who are going to suffer and die, be so desperate to join the military to wage war and come home in pieces, that feeds the infernal war machine?
Because it crosses the line of agreed-upon civility, this tactic is always messy.
Truly, after all that I've listed in my rant, your tactics don't mean much, just more media time and not changing anything.
Okay:
Ain't you glad, my fellow DUers I stopped, but I don't forget much. I haven't forgotten the many who suffer in this country, whose lives never mattered to the media gadflies, and don't have time to gallivant around and act all googly eyes like this picture, blowing kisses. Sent to a self-serving chauvinist who claims to be for peace, but since peace is closer to helping those people he'd rather not deal with, I'm not buying it:
Those who turn a blind eye to Ron Paul's positions (since he was *cough* anti-war and pro-pot, but conveniently didn't think women should control their bodies, and all that antique stuff) this applies to Rand too:
Okay then. Feel free to put me on Ignore.
