In an interview with NBC, the GOP presidential candidate said he's not concerned about women getting emotional but suggested their presence could have an impact on men.
"When you have men and women together in combat, I think men have emotions when you see a woman in harm's way," Santorum said on the Today show. "I think it's natural. It's very much in our culture to be protective. That was my concern. I think that's a concern with all of the militaries."
The Pentagon unveiled new rules Thursday that formally opened thousands of jobs as medics, radio operators, intelligence officers and communications officers in battalions. The informal practice has been that women could be attached to a battalion in those roles, but not permanently assigned to them.
In an interview with CNN last night, Santorum said he does have "concerns" about women in front-line combat roles. "I think that could be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in interest of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved," he said on CNN.
