TACOMA, Wash. - A rabidly anti-gay church has canceled its plans to picket Saturday's funeral for the two sons of missing mom Susan Powell, who died in a raging house fire Sunday.

Fred Phelps Jr., founder of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church, sent out a tweet Friday morning saying the hate group had canceled the protest after getting an interview on a syndicated radio show.

"Just finished interview with @BobbyDshow. Bobby D. was a real gentleman. Washington trip now cancelled," Phelps' tweet said. Margie Phelps of the Westboro church group later sent out another tweet confirming the cancellation.

Phelps originally said Thursday that the hate group was planning to attend the Powell boys' memorial service as a protest against the pending legalization of gay marriage in Washington state.

Chuck and Judy Cox, the boy's grandparents, and the church pastor are asking anyone on either side whose intent is to protest to stay away from the Life Center Church Saturday morning. The public is invited to attend the 11 a.m. funeral, which is expected to last about an hour.

5. I think there should be a group which is decidated to "punking" the

Westboro bunch by 'announcing' fake funerals for non-existent "sodomites". Select an address in the the most crime-ridden neighborhoods or the most remote sewage-treatment facilities and announce a "public memorial service" which they would want to protest. Waste their time and money chasing shadows.

Pretty disrespectful of all protest groups to not take the family into consideration that includes the two Occupy groups that were planning on building a curtain to block off WBC from the public... This was not going to be a pretty sight. TPD probably would have had to use pepper spray.

I have been suggesting to Occupy Tacoma on their forum since Wednesday to use their energy doing a fundraiser for a non profit family support group and not be in a spirit of conflict.
