(27,787 posts)365 is days, I get that part.
And 280×10^6 is the total sperm in one ejaculate ... got it.
So its the 35 and the 2.5 that throw me off.
Are you saying that for the last 2.5 years you masturbate 35 times a day ... or ... are you saying that for the last 35 years you masturbate 2.5 times a day .... because if its the latter ... well, doesn't that mean that you only actually "finish" 2 times a day, and that on the 3rd try, you only make it "half way"??
Sorry to get so personal ... but stuff like this keeps me up at night.

(12,504 posts)a man who is medically infertile could still ejaculate 80 million sperm.
And what about those dudes that went through the snip. Theoretically there is no sperm in the ejaculate....but does eliminating the presence of sperm (like eliminating ovulation) also count as an abortion? This inquiring mind wants to know.
I think I shall send King an e-mail and will post the repsonse.

By Susan Campbell On February 8, 2012 ·
An Oklahoma state senator has inserted an every sperm is sacred clause into a personhood bill in her state. The clause says, in part:
any action in which a man ejaculates or otherwise deposits semen anywhere but in a womans vagina shall be interpreted and construed as an action against an unborn child.
You can read more about Okla. State Sen. Constance N. Johnson here. You can read more about the personhood movement protecting the pre-born here.

The Staggering Death Toll
Every time a woman menstruates, the bloody flow includes the corpse of one (or more!) preconceived babies. This is why menstruation has been known as "The Curse".
There are an estimated 3 billion women of childbearing age, menstruating an average of 12 times a year. That is 36 billion preconceived babies dying every single year!
In addition, if a woman reaches menopause or has her reproductive organs removed before all her preconceived babies have had a chance at life, all of her remaining preconceived children will die--and her own body will be their grave.

(111,277 posts)You mean like there is NO EGG when a woman is on the pill meaning NO PREGNANCY and that means NO ABORTION?
Steve King is the original fuckhead, just look it up in the dictionary and you'll see his picture instead of a definition.
He, like Rome, believes the ancient homunculus theory, that semen contained tiny perfect male human beings that needed to be planted into the walking flowerpots called women to grow. If something was wrong with the flowerpot, it came out female. Oh, dear, time for a new flowerpot. It's also the reason they think masturbation is such a heinous sin, condemning all those tiny perfect males to death by dehydration in a wad of Kleenex.
I don't know why this thing is in Congress. I think he needs to withdraw, leave his wife, and go into the priesthood. With the amount of fervent ignorance he possesses, I'm sure he'd rise through the ranks quickly.

(26,549 posts)There can still be an egg. It's rare, but sometimes ovulation will still occur while a woman is on the pill. If there is one and it gets fertilized, it will be expelled when the pill induces the next period.
That's the basis for the right-wing tools claiming birth control pills cause abortion.

(12,482 posts)of course what's real mind blowing is how real it all is
the catholic heirarchy (from priests to popes) are all celebate men who forbid (with nearly exclusive failure) the millions of catholic women worldwide from using contraception - including married ones, especially married ones since the unwed women shouldn't be having congress with anyone as far as these celebate men are conserned. it is stunning, really. what a calcified, osified and utterly archaic institution. i am not badmouthing the faithful catholic laity; they overwhelmingly support and use contraception.
seriously, what an amazingly absurd situation.

(111,277 posts)The Episcopalians in the US are often like a fresh breeze after the stifling atmosphere in a Rome dominated church even when the congregation isn't all that liberal---although most are quite liberal. In any case, the form and dogma are nearly the same minus a bunch of old men in dresses claiming to be infallible and yapping about things they have no business yapping about.
I grew up Irish Catholic. I left when I was in grammar school and never went looking for anything else because I didn't believe a word of any of it. However, I have a great deal of compassion for people who do believe and are in the quandary of wanting to remain Catholic while rejecting the horseshit Rome keeps throwing at them that has absolutely nothing to do with their souls, only their bodies.
My own fervent hope is that the Vatican loses enough support that they are forced to either change their tune or they disappear entirely. I honestly don't care which.

(36,281 posts)Don't ask republicans to consider it too thoroughly, LOL.
Sperm are cheap to produce and relatively easy to deliver, so most male reproductive strategies-- regardless of phylum-- focus upon copious sperm production and frequent copulation or other release of gametes. Ova, on the other hand, are metabolically expensive to produce and, for many animals, even more energy intensive to shepherd through embryogeny. Some species have evolved strategies to mitigate some of that extra female expense using various means for increasing male investment in the success of offspring, or even just improving female reproductive fitness, but the fundamental reproductive disparity remains, even for species in which females invest little beyond the production of ova, such as some broadcast spawning marine invertebrates.
The point is that sperm are designed to be wasted, by the billions. It's an optimized gamete delivery system that minimizes the cost of syngamy while maximizing the likelihood of bringing gametes together.

(14,308 posts)In high school, my science teacher gave us a definition of life.
It was a long time ago, but basically it was that a living thing can ingest nutrients, expel wastes, and reproduce.
So under this definition, a sperm is not a living thing, but you look at a microscope and see it swimming around.
Never got a chance to ask him that. Too embarrassed at the time (long time ago - different era), so now I'm still wishing I had 40 years later.

When they merge, and those 2 sets of 23 chromosomes become 1 set of 46 in a fertilized egg, they magically immediately transmogrify into a "baby" with "rights" because, uh, well, because we say so.
I don't know how anyone can argue with such iron-clad logic. Sigh.

(11,990 posts)Okay, this may not be the thread to take anything seriously, but for those who believe that a fetus is a human life, well, technically, science will confirm that (a) it is indeed alive, and (b) it is also, genetically speaking, human, having a complete set of human DNA. Whether it's a "person" is a different issue, but it is, from a biological perspective, a human life.
Since the unfertilized egg and the sperm only carry half the DNA sequence, neither could be said to be, genetically, a human.
