Knowing (in their gut) that they just foisted the worst president in over a half century onto the American public, and did so very consciously and deliberately but in a the deranged manner of a Rove-Machiavellian, a decision likely induced by eight years of hatred against Bill and Hillary Clinton.
And their new hatreds (now against Obama and Hillary Clinton) are dangerously mixing with their past shame and self-hating denials to create the possibility that a Sarah Palin would be a heart beat away, as they say. To that point, the link below brought me to these musings. It is the story of what Palin was like at Fox News, but for me, growing up in the age of Ike and Jack and Lyndon, it is the vehicle of wonderment of how she ever once rose so high. To have been so close . . .! My god.
What else can explain it but a whirlwind of shame and hatred, perhaps by now realizing no real difference?

(20,577 posts)I was trying to describe those times to a friend from China. She holds Nixon in high regard because of the opening to China.
I told her that the partisanship at that time was not nearly a ruthless as it is now. I recall that most everyone was appalled by his behavior and the resistance on the part of the Republicans was not great. I do remember people who voted for him were disappointed in Nixon's behavior.
Is that how you remember it?

(5,946 posts)The hearings were not good for Nixon. Neither democrats nor republicans seemed to want to turn over this rock. But once it turned, it was ruthless and endless.
Of course, the big chess tournament was going on at the same time, so... oi would watch that instead, heh.
The congress really never got down the the nitty gritty to takes others down as well, like Geo Bush who appeared to "deep six"ed the files. No one seemed to have the stomache to really get down to it, but most of the republicans did not respect Ford and every democrat elected president since than has had stuff they did compared as worse than watergate, like it is that easy, yet no one said Iran Contra was worse than watergate and it was.

(2,140 posts)For me to buy into the premise that thugs act out of shame and self loathing, seems to require that I also buy that they have the "self awareness" to do so,when having that self awareness would stop them from doing so much of what they do...
Too big of a leap for me.
