KC man admits falsifying athletic achievements to defraud City Hall health insurance plan

A Kansas City man pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to lying about his athletic achievements to defraud his City Hall health insurance plan.

Michael King, 31, who is suspended without pay from his job in the Kansas City water department, pleaded guilty to a single count of wire fraud. King admitted that he fraudulently claimed to have completed athletic events and received gift cards worth $12,745 from his insurer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City.

King admitted making bogus submissions to the insurance company on behalf of 51 city employees, resulting in the issuance of 79 gift cards.

King told Blue Cross that he had completed three duathlons, two half marathons, three marathons, four triathlons and one Olympic lifting event in 2010.

Prosecutors charged seven Kansas City and Jackson County employees in December with defrauding the program of more than $300,000 on behalf of hundreds of public employees.
