http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/feb/10/cameron-scrap-nhs-bill-lansleyDavid Cameron has been urged to replace Andrew Lansley and drop large chunks of the health bill by the Conservative party's most widely read and influential website.
The ConservativeHome intervention is particularly damaging to Cameron because Montgomerie says he was encouraged to speak out by three Conservative cabinet minsters who believe that pressing ahead with the bill would be folly.
Reacting to the ConservativeHome editorial, shadow health secretary Andy Burnham said: "We already know that the Prime Minister isn't listening to doctors and nurses. But it's a shock to find out that even senior members of his own Cabinet have to take to a Conservative website to get through to him about the damage he is doing to the NHS.
"It couldn't be clearer: this is an out-of-touch Prime Minister who is putting his political pride before the best interests of the NHS," he said.

(336 posts)The NHS is something you mess with at your peril.
If you want to know what a Romney presidency would look like, this is probably something like it - a stealthy dismantling of public institutions for the benefit of private sector buddies.

(1,138 posts)If Obamacare gets back on the front burner 2012 will be a replay of 2010. It should be scrapped ASAP. This Catholic uproar is just the start. By passing that disaster the Democratic Party gave its best issue to the GOP. It is a lousy capitulation to insurance companies and drug companies. It is shooting fish in a barrel for the GOP spin machine.

(20,441 posts)Had the Public Option survived the corrupt Senate dealings, I don't think there would have been as much outcry and anger from the left against the bill. Had the Public Option been a strong one, even less so. That, along with other economic issues, probably de-energized the left in 2010, but the social conservatives and right-wingers came out in big numbers on the mistaken belief that Obama is a communist and is a Muslim.

(57,936 posts)I had no insurance for a number of years. It is an awful situation to be in. The bill is not perfect, but it is a big improvement on no bill at all.
I just wish that the reforms would have been completed before the coming election. I think people will be delighted once they are effective.
Will there be changes, a big movement toward a public option and then single-payer. For sure. But for now the health insurance reform bill is a positive step in my opinion.

(41,208 posts)Their attacks on 'Obamacare' are not because it involves too much compromise with insurance and drug companies but because it's a move away from total privatization, to some government regulation and attempts to ensure that people don't die from lack of healthcare.
Yes, for a Europaean point of view even this bill is thin gruel. It probably has a certain amount in common with the Cameron bill; the difference is that in Cameron's case, it's moving from single-payer to partial privatization; in Obama's case, it's moving from almost total privatization to only partial privatization.
The right-wing (with support from drug and insurance companies) prevented Truman from introducing universal healthcare; they prevented Lyndon Johnson from doing so; they prevented the Clintons from doing so. This is not about Obama's healthcare bill in particular; it is about those vile monsters opposing even the slightest move in the direction of universal healthcare.

(1,138 posts)It works. Giving it to all would be universal. This Rube Goldberg Plan will be the death of 1,000 cuts for the whole DNC. If you are not familiar with it it is simple. It pays 80% of your bill and you can go to any Doc you want. It pays 100% of your Hospital after the first day. It is a great plan.

(101,322 posts)They have painted themselves into the "there's too much government" corner. Their case now consists of "everyone should be free to buy expensive insurance, or risk dying if they can't afford it".

(1,138 posts)I advocate and argue for Medicare for everyone. Not the current Medicare mess but the original from the 60's. It worked. Pay for it by expanding the Medicare tax. That is guaranteed constitutional. Get rid of insurance companies and lawyers and triage the system. It would satisfy everyone but the crooks and control freaks. I think it is a legit role for government now. Health care is no longer insurable anyway. Senator Bob Graham from Florida advocated this and he was right.
