Mississippi Republicans won control of the state house of representatives for the first time since 1872 last November and our first Republican speaker was sworn not long ago. Anti-immigrant legislation has been so overwhelming that state senator Steve Holland, who is an usually an intelligent moderate Democrat, offered a bill to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. It was meant to ridicule Republican attacks on Hispanics. Sadly, Mississippi has such a shitty reputation that people believe its actually meant to be serious.

Please don't contribute to the ignorance. Steve Holland isn't a rightwing nutcase-it was just a very stupid attempt to show how batshit crazy Mississippi Republicans have become.

So he wants to change the name Mississippi River, from an American Indian word, to the Lincoln River, named after a white man? And he was also to stupid apparently to see the sarcasm of Holland's bill.
