(5,756 posts)She really doesn't seem like the type who would have come to an intelligent decision like this on her own. It just isn't in her nature. I'm sure she'd say God wants her in congress.
I'm betting Rove and others twisted her arm pretty hard to get her to stay out of the race because they feel she'd be a real loser in 2014. I wonder if they offered to drop the ethics investigations in the House as a way to get her to drop out?
It's about keeping the House seat, and I don't think she is going willingly. I'm glad to see her go, but I doubt her potential replacement will be any better, and because of this it's probably not going to be a Democrat.

(23,250 posts)Good riddance to seriously bad rubbish, but it may cost Dems a good shot at a pick-up, and if she's leaving at Rove's behest, you can bet her chosen successor will be a corporo-fascist type.

(33,164 posts)The "Ding Dong Song that is not to be mentioned". But, I will hold off for awhile.
Until it's clear that this isn't some sort of perverse reverse attention seeking 3-D chess ploy to garner sympathy and some $$$.
When it's clear that she's really going to "spend more dysfunctional time with the family", tho. I move DU starts a forum with nothing, but, a video of that song and her picture on an endless loop... Just like her political career has been.
For now, a smile must do...

(24,692 posts)Representative Michele Bachmann, the Minnesota Republican who made an ill-fated run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, announced Wednesday that she would not seek a fifth term in Congress next year.
I have decided next year I will not seek a fifth congressional term, she said in a video on her campaign Web site. This decision was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign or my former presidential staff, she added.
Mrs. Bachmann is known for her strong anti-abortion stance and adherence to Tea Party values but her presidential campaign was marked by frequent stumbles and her candidacy failed to catch fire in a crowded field of candidates that included Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas and Herman Cain, who all eventually lost to Mitt Romney.
In her congressional race last year, Mrs. Bachmann won re-election by just 4,200 votes out of 356,000 votes cast, beating the hotelier Jim Graves, who was greatly outspent. Mr. Graves recently announced that he would seek the seat again.

(32,086 posts)Her potential Democratic opponent in next year's election is beating her. And, yes, the ethics investigation has a lot to do with that. I'll bet money that the GOP is pushing her out in order to keep that seat. It's a conservative district, and they're making room for someone who is a less nutty version of her.

(136 posts)descisions to vacate elective office, the reasons seem many, generally, it may be mostly based on the major issue or issues at hand, e.g. family issues, redistricting, etc. In Bachman's case, I find the Federal investigation being the most significant, regardless how those investigations seem more window dressing with little accomplished. Another reason may be the potential loss in the next election, if she steps down in not seeking reelection, she preserves her brand. Don't laugh. Anyway, if she is beaten and rejected by the voters, that is a hard fact that lasts for ever until she fades into irrelevance.

(541 posts)The ethics investigation, is she/the GOP afraid she would lose next time, do she and Marcus want to devote more time to their "pray away the gay business?", is she afraid her marriage is in trouble since Minnesota legalized same sex marriage?
