Petition for Obama administration to help NASA to develop a warp core by 2073 (Original Post) Aaronquah May 2013 OP
Bullshit. NASA is already working on a warp-drive, but you can't force discoveries to happen. DetlefK May 2013 #1
It's going to be a long time before this kind of thing even starts to turn into a spaceship engine. backscatter712 May 2013 #4
They wanted to circumvent this by somehow employing the Casimir-effect. DetlefK May 2013 #6
Perhaps we should lock in our Dilithium Crystal technology first. Buns_of_Fire May 2013 #2

The NASA is currently trying to build a device that would cause space-time-disturbances similar to the warp-drive proposed by Alcubierre, but so far they haven't been able to filter out the noise (micro-earthquakes) from their measurements. The experiment was moved to a new site and currently set up anew.

And Alcubierre's warp-drive would be a bad idea anyway: Would need an amount of energy roughly equal to one ton of matter-antimatter-reaction and would double as an interstellar weapon of mass-destruction.

Major improvements need to be done in that field, to find a better warp-field-formula and to find a better warp-drive-architecture, but you can't "mandate" that a discovery is supposed to happen before an arbitrary date.

IIRC, the Alcubierre drive required matter with negative mass in order to work. That stuff's a wee bit hard to come by...

The articles were nebulous at best on the details.

"Dammit, Scotty, I want all power to the impulse portapotties!"
"I canna give you any more, Keptain! She's about to blow!"
"So am I! Have you ever had Saurian Burritos?"

The White House should scrap the petition page. Americans are too silly and childish to take it seriously.
