US approves first nuclear plant since 1986 (AFP)

10 February 2012

WASHINGTON — The US government gave the final green light Thursday for the construction of the first new nuclear power reactors in the country since 1986.

In a hearing, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved the construction of two new reactors at power generator Southern Co’s existing Vogtle, Georgia facility. snip

The decision Thursday came despite being opposed by NRC chairman Gregory Jaczko, who said Japan’s nuclear industry disaster signalled the need for more caution.

“I cannot support issuing this license as if Fukushima has never happened... In my view that is what we are doing,” he said.

Times are changing. Sure wish I knew what we are going to do with the waste from these things. My kids and grand kids will be wondering that some day too. I imagine these newer reactors are safer than the older ones that have been in service for 30-40 years, but how safe will these reactors be in another 30-40 years?

My son, as a little boy (2nd or 3rd grade) had a great idea, I thought, on what to do with nuclear waste: send it into the Sun. Now, clearly, getting it there would be problematic -- or at least RISKY as all get out -- but it was the best idea I've ever heard otherwise (aside from: Just Say NO!).
