"If it was rape, it was a good rape".

The Little Coochie Snorcher That Could, in which a woman recalls memories of traumatic sexual experiences in her childhood and a self-described "positive healing" sexual experience in her adolescent years with an older woman. This particular skit has sparked outrage, numerous controversies and criticisms due to its content, among which the most famous is the Robert Swope controversy. In the original version, she is 13, but later versions would change her age to 16. It also originally included the line, "If it was rape, it was a good rape." which was removed from later versions.

(20,600 posts)1. Is the law being followed? (is it legal for the girl to have intercourse in the state)
2. Did the girl want to get drunk?
3. Is the female saying it was wrong what happened, or is she saying it was ok? Obviously this is the key factor. If the girl says she was raped, then it should be investigated by the police. On the other hand, if the girl was ok with it, then I don't think it is anyone elses business.

(20,600 posts)apparently different states have different age consent rules. But I don't think any of them say it is legal for 12 years or younger to participate in sexual activity. I think also common sense tells people that anyone younger than a certain age being engaged in sexual activity with someone would be pedophilia.

(47,209 posts)Gotta draw the line somewhere, and I'm glad it's not generally at 12.

(5,169 posts)At the risk of upsetting fans of "The Vagina Monologues", sex with a 13 year old is illegal everywhere. In later versions of the play, the age was raised to 16, which is legal in many places, but unethical for anyone over the age of 19. And getting a minor drunk to have sex with them is ALWAYS wrong everywhere.

(20,600 posts)I am more liberal regarding these things. I have a European attitude regarding this, not a typical American culture repressive attitude.

(13,390 posts)But that one didn't sit well with me. I would add that using intoxication to have sex with someone is ALWAYS wrong. Roofies, alcohol, no matter what age- if it is used with the intention to take sexual advantage of a person it should be prosecuted.
I pointed out in another thread that the older girl could have been the younger girl's babysitter. I just wished a happy bday to someone I used to babysit- who is 4 yrs. younger than me. The power differential in which an older person can threaten or otherwise coerce someone younger has to be taken into account. If it is ignored, many child molestation cases would not be taken seriously. You can bet that many victims claim the relationship was consensual because of threats\intimidation. And there are times when it is "consensual" in order to protect other siblings.
The situation under discussion is unusual. The more common situations under these conditions are those where choices were limited and severe damage was done. There is a very good, responsible reason for the age cutoffs. The statutory rape laws are designed to protect people not necessarily punish people who did not mean any harm. It has to be applied across the board if victims are going to be protected.

It's not okay for 13-year-olds to drink at all, and i wouldn't give a 16-year-old more than a half-glass of wine at weddings and christenings.
I don't much care what the law says - it's too changeable, arbitrary and subject to local prejudice.
As for the story, sexual congress with a woman is less likely to harm a girl, physically or emotionally, than with a man. That's not an absolute, just a statistical probability, highly case-dependent.
If that's what happened to the author and she wants to talk about it, let her talk about it.
