Pit bull saves owner from potential attack along Fair Oaks jogging trail

Heroic pit bull Rubie.

FAIR OAKS, Calif. - A local woman says her pit bull jumped into action and saved her from a potentially vicious attack along a secluded Fair Oaks jogging trail.

"She saved me from something that could have been very bad," Victoria Zaragoza said.

Zaragoza was walking with 1-year-old Rubie at Bannister Park around 4:30 Sunday afternoon when a man on a bike pretended to be hurt.

...

"Her fur was all standing up. She had a growl that was very threatening towards him," Zaragoza said. "She was just focused on him. I've never seen her like that."

...

Rubie was scheduled to be put down but was saved by Chako Pit Bull Rescue. Zaragoza fostered her. She knew she couldn't let her go, so she adopted Rubie. Now, the dog that Zaragoza saved has returned the favor.

I know it's hard to find good news articles on pit bulls every time this breed is justifiably slammed making the news for killing or mauling someone (a 2 month old baby, this time), but if you have to go into the vault to do so, then you're losing the battle.

Which may explain why hosts of this forum did not have a problem with it.

for me, not the forum's SOP.

This OP comes across as desperate dredging in order to find something to counteract another horrifying pit bull attack that just occured.

I can't read minds very well, so have no idea of poster's motive.
To me, it was a cautionary tale, well taken.

there are 3 scenarios with large dogs...either they are too friendly to be a defender beyond the utility of their appearance, they are dependent on the dog's judgement which is often flawed resulting in the dog attacking or trying to attack the mailman or utility workers or other unintended victims, or the dog is an attack dog, not a pet, trained nonstop throughout it's life, which few people have the knowledge or inclination to do..

We have German Shepards because we like them, but we always keep them friendly and only depend on their appearance to deter unwanted visitors..

In this case what happens if the dog lunges? Does the owner have the strength to keep the dog from attacking an innocent person, or even if this person had bad intentions, if the person had not acted on the bad intentions and the dog attacked him the owner is in serious trouble..no, for most people, defensive dogs are very bad idea..
