I have always liked Douglass, but he is pretty much who he is.

This was a BRILLIANT character performance.

Just obvious he spent A LOT of time getting the him down.

Just a career performance for him.

And, while Damon has never been afraid to do something that is risky, this was a real tough one to take on.

I cut the premium channels, and later cut down from mid-level programming to the basic.

I'm considering getting an inside digital antenna to get local stations, and then subscribing to netflix & whatever for programming, because it's still not cheap enough. My bill is over $60 for BASIC (they call it "entertainment" package).

Next to cut: the landline. That one's gonna hurt. But it runs me $50 a month.

$50 a month ($35/mo plus fees and taxes), then long distance to family on top of that. Imagine cutting $40 a month, permanently (even if the Magic Jack or Vonage runs $10/mo). That's $480 a year minimum savings. Quite a chunk of money.

Then if I cut the satellite...runs me $65, a and replace it with $20 worth of subscriptions, that saves $45/mo., which saves $540/year.

Both of those together save over $1000 a year! Wow! And I'd still get good tv and decent phone.

Thanks for the Roku recommendation! And I am going to subscribe to Netflix. I just did the free trial, and I loved it. I didn't know that there was free stuff on Roku, so that seals the deal.

Fantastic work by all, though I admit it was a bit bizarre watching "Michael Douglas" and "Matt Damon" make out at first. Am haunted by the shot of an older Scott watching Liberace hit on the young performer after a show -- Damon really caught something extraordinary there. Loved the small touches, like Scott's g-string tan line and Liberace's mom demanding to be paid for her win. Will watch it again to catch even more.

But wasn't interested in going back and seeing the rest. Not my cup of tea.

I always think the toughest thing to do as an actor is play a real person, especially someone as famous as Liberace. That's why so many actors and actresses win Academy Awards for those roles. So I enjoy watching for the performances. The movie itself was pretty trashy, like most TV movie biopics. I thought the material was beneath both of the stars.

My mom and sisters and I all watched Liberace's TV show when I was a kid, always loved him. It was always great fun to see what kind of outrageous outfit he'd be wearing each week. I was way too young and sheltered to be aware there was such a thing as homosexuality - we all just thought of Liberace as simply a particularly eccentric and flamboyant entertainer. He was just very sweet and lovable - he radiated so much joy.

It was an amazing performance by Michael Douglas! Very entertaining movie.

Acting was great and I'll never look at Matt Damon the same way again, he was hot!! While it was very entertaining and combined a lot of humor with the drama, it made you think about how difficult life was for folks that had to stay in the "closet". I couldn't imagine having to lead such a secret life. I remember watching Liberace when I was a little girl with my parents, homosexuality was not something I'd even heard of then, so I was clueless.

It's very sad Liberace had to deny who he really was and I'm sure he kept his staff busy keeping his real life hidden, squashing rumors, and the lawsuits. Even at the end they tried to protect him by lying about what he died from. Seems with all his money and fame he was a very unhappy man, ashamed of who he was and never able to love freely. Very sad.

Wed May 29, 2013, 07:34 PM
May 2013

Even though the movie had an A-List director tied to it, as well as two A-List actors, no studio wanted it.

Amid all of the secrets and lies being spilled at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour are highly intriguing reports about Behind the Candelabra, the long-in-the-works, “too gay for Hollywood” Liberace biopic that Steven Soderbergh was finally able to get made thanks to HBO. Critics were treated on Friday to “a lengthy first look” at the movie, which is about the scorchingly flamboyant entertainer’s turbulent affair with his much younger assistant Scott Thorson.

Soderbergh told reporters that he took Candelabra to HBO only after he failed to find studio backing, in spite of the involvement of two major stars and a small $5 million budget. "They said it was too gay. Everybody. This was after Brokeback Mountain, by the way. Which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us."
