Muslim clerics issue a fatwa against honour killings, domestic violence and hatred of women

Muslim clerics in Canada issued a fatwa on Saturday against honour killings, domestic violence and hatred of women.

“These crimes are major sins in Islam, punishable by the court of law and almighty Allah,” said Prof. Imam Syed Soharwardy, representing 34 clerics affiliated with the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada.

The announcement was made at a news conference in Mississauga, on the eve of Eid Milad un Nabi, which Muslims celebrate as the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.

The fatwa — a morally binding religious edict — was issued by the ISCC in the wake of a quadruple-murder trial involving a polygamous Muslim-Canadian family living in Montreal.

We, the undersigned Imams, are issuing this Fatwa as a reminder to the Muslims of North America regarding
the issues of domestic violence, honour killings and misogyny in our society. The recent Shafia family trial in
Kingston, Ontario has reminded all of us that we need to do more in order to prevent such tragedies in future.
There are some Muslims who would commit a crime and then use Islam to justify their crime. According to
the Qur’an the biggest liar is the one who tells lies on Allah.
There is no justification for honour killings, domestic violence and misogyny in Islam. These are crimes in the
court of law and in the sight of Allah. Therefore, this Fatwa is issued based upon the command of almighty
Allah in the holy Qur’an;

And while they obviously can't force individual Muslims to follow it - still it's more than just a 'we think this would be nice' for practicing Muslims in North America.

At any rate, it's a good step forward and a very appropriate response to the crime that prompted them to issue it.
