Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHas there been an explanation for why the 4th-5th &6th graders were evacuated
from that school and the k-3 kids had to "hug a wall" before they perished when the school blew away?
How is it that there was time to evacuate some, but not all of the kids?

(56,582 posts)1. Evacuating is almost never a good idea during a tornado warning
The worst place you can be is between point A and point B. Were the 4-6 kids even in the same building?

and there was at least a half an hour between warning & impact.
If that church is older, it is probably a much more substantial building.
I guess we'll hear more about this when things are a bit more settled.

(29,215 posts)4. with this time being the exception
This time, because of the size and power of the tornado, staying put in ANY building that was above ground was a bad idea.
Best was to try to get away from the path of the tornado.
And that's exactly the message sent by a TV meteorologist who was reporting on the tornado before it got to the really populated spots.
But normally, staying inside away from windows, preferably in an enclosed small interior space (surrounded by some metal like a bathtub), is the best idea.
But an EF5 or high EF4 is just going to clean the earth.
It didn't just break branches of the trees and strip them of their leaves, it peeled the BARK off of the stumps. One reporter said it pulled the grass out of the ground by the roots.
