If I actually had a "Top 10 Favorite Movies" list, I would certainly put the 1999 film "Girl, Interrupted" in it.

I know that many DUers know a great deal more about Angelina Jolie that I, and I can accept that. Even in the context of her recent medical decision.

Anyhow, it's a serious film, based upon Susanna Kaysen's book, from when she was voluntarily hospitalized in 1967 for attempting to overdose on aspirin. Winona Ryder plays the main character (Kaysen), who was diagnosed with aborderline personality disorder; Jolie played Rowe, who was diagnosed as a sociopath.

If I've seen Jolie in any film since, it's slipped my mind. I tend to watch movies in much the same manner as I read books -- non-fiction. But I was very impressed by her in this movie.

I fully support her making decisions for herself.

And I gently urge others to watch (or, re-watch) this movie.

I think she's a great 'movie star' and heard from a friend/key grip who worked with her that she's as nice as she is talented and gorgeous. I support her decision 100% because it's hers...doesn't matter what I think at all.

she won an Academy Award as supporting actress for that role. Personally, though I thought Ryder was outstanding, I thought Jolie made the film as powerful as it was.

6. I do recommend it. I think this is the first

time I paid attention to her as an actress. She was/is beautiful, fodder for mags, but she was truly talented.

And then there's her humanitarian efforts. All in all, I'd love to call someone like this a friend. She's got it going on even without the fame, or in spite of it.

particularly fond of her father. But everything that I've read about her -- admittedly limited -- suggests that she has a social conscience, and acts upon it.

I will make a point of watching it. One of the things that I appreciate the most about DU, over the years I have inhabited it, have been the suggestions on books, movies, etc.

In fact, one of my best friends on this forum got me to go out and buy the DVD "Promised Land" today. My older daughter and I will be watching it in a few minutes. (This is a great friend who I "argue" with at times, but always tongue-in-cheek.)

12. It was good but sad. If you were young in the 80's (I graduated high school 82) it reminds you of

that time and all the people who died from aids. Especially how little we knew about it in the early years.

in the 1980s. But I certainly remember that time .... I was on the board of directors of STAP (the Southern Tier Aids Program in NYS) which cover 13 counties.

Other films of hers I really like include Beyond Borders, Gia (very great performance) and Changeling which is a favorite of mine because the true story was not well known, but my mother had told me the story. Very chilling tale, Changeling.

15. I Was Srunned By Her Decision

And the courage it took. As i understand it, she didn't want her children to suffer the loss she did when her mother died at a relatively young age from breast cancer.
